What is Measure Of Central Tendency?
A measure of central tendency is a statistical concept used to describe and summarize a set of data by providing a single value that represents the middle or center of the data set. The three most commonly used measures of central tendency are the mean, median, and mode.The mean is calculated by adding up all the values in the data set and dividing by how many values there are. This gives an average of all the numbers. For example, if you have five numbers (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) then you would add them together (15) and divide by five (3). The mean would be 3.The median is calculated by ordering all the values from smallest to largest and selecting the middle value in this list. If there are an even number of values then you take the average of the two middlemost numbers as your median value. For example, if you have six numbers (1, 2 ,3 ,4 ,5 and 6) then you would order them smallest to largest (1, 2 ,3 ,4 ,5 and 6) with 3 being in the middle position so your median value would be 3 too. Finally we have mode which is determined by finding out which number appears most often in a given data set or sample group – this number is called its mode. For example – if our sample group was 1,2 ,3 ,4 ,5 & 6 – our mode will be none as each number appears only once. In conclusion measures of central tendency such as mean, median & mode can provide us with summarized information about our data sets without having to look at every individual datapoint within it.
