What is Gender Studies?

Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to understand the role of gender and gender roles in society. It is a broad subject, incorporating many different aspects of social life, such as culture, history, politics, language, psychology, media and law. Gender Studies is concerned with how gender affects people’s lives in all areas; from the workplace to home life to education and more. It investigates how power structures influence our understanding of gendered identities and experiences. Gender Studies has grown significantly since its inception in the 1970s. The advent of second-wave feminism sparked a need for this kind of research as feminists sought to understand how patriarchy influences women’s (and men’s) lives across various contexts. As such, much contemporary Gender Studies focusses on exploring topics like inequality between genders in the workplace or domestic violence against women by their male partners. Additionally, Gender Studies now includes discussions around LGBTQ+ rights issues or transgender individuals’ struggles with acceptance within society – both things which have only become prominent recently but are still crucial today when it comes to understanding gender dynamics globally. The ultimate goal of Gender Studies is not just to document disparities but also devise solutions through which we can begin dismantling oppressive systems while creating new ones that empower everyone regardless of their sex or gender identity/expression. By creating critical dialogue around these issues we can work towards making a world where equity really does exist for everyone – something that remains impossible until people properly start addressing problems related to sexism and other forms of oppression head-on instead of simply ignoring them or brushing them off as unimportant matters.
