What is Bones?
Bones are the structures that form the framework of our bodies. They provide support, protection and movement to our body, allowing us to move around in a functional way. Bones also protect many internal organs such as the heart and lungs from physical damage, while providing structure for muscles and ligaments so they can perform their functions. Bones also help produce red blood cells which carry oxygen throughout our body, enabling us to survive. Bones are made up of living tissues which consist of calcium phosphate minerals, collagen fibers and bone marrow. The bone tissue is constantly being remodeled as it gets damaged or worn away over time by everyday activities like walking or jumping. This occurs through a process called ‘bone remodeling’ where osteoclasts break down old bones and osteoblasts build new one with fresh material leading to stronger bones overtime. The human skeleton contains 206 bones that come in all different shapes and sizes depending on their function in the body; long bones found in arms and legs are designed for strength while flat bones like those found in your skull give you protection from external forces or blunt trauma injuries. Other than supporting our bodies weight, providing shape and protecting vital organs some other functions of bones include storing energy reserves such as calcium & phosphorus along with producing important hormones like testosterone & oestrogen which regulate bodily processes including growth & development amongst others. In conclusion we can see how essential bones are to us; without them we would be unable to stand upright let alone walk. It is important therefore that we take care of our skeletal system by eating healthy diets rich in calcium & exercising regularly as this will ensure strong healthy bones capable of carrying out its numerous functions properly now & into old age.
