Similar to Afghanistan's Taliban, Somalia's Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab conducts indiscriminate attacks on high-profile events, crowded places, events attended by government officials, and places frequented by Western foreigners.

Prior to the invasion of Somalia by allied forces from various African countries aiming to eradicate this banned group, Al-Shabaab militants used to cross into Kenya - Somalia's neighboring country - specifically to kidnap Western tourists and demand ransoms worth millions of dollars (Solomon, 2015).

However,r recent reports show a significant decline in the power and influence of the group between 2011 and 2016.

Experts in security claim that the Taliban's rule ended in 2003 when they were defeated by coalition forces. However, there are concerns that unless current economic, political, and governance issues are resolved, terrorist organizations could resurface and regain strength (Schimitt, n.d). The global community might not have enough resources to effectively combat terrorism. Security analysts suggest various strategies for engagement such as reducing the number of coalition forces involved in targeted attacks, sharing intelligence information, and strengthening the capabilities of local partners in fighting against terrorism (Schimitt, n.d). This approach has successfully weakened both the Taliban and Al-Shabaab. It is important to acknowledge that modern terrorism is multifaceted and includes a new threat from the Islamic State.

Despite the ongoing

progress in both countries, preventing the current situation from reversing is crucial for achieving peace and prosperity in both nations.
