Literature is one of the forms of communication used to express a writer’s inner feelings about a particular issue to the audience. It is a platform that authors use to try and condemn some of the cultural injustices happening in the society.
This essay is an analysis of a quote that Margaret Atwood gave in an interview "I was once a graduate student in Victorian literature, and I believe as the Victorian novelists did, that a novel isn't simply a vehicle for private expression, but that it also exists for social examination. I firmly believe this.” It also analyses how her ideas are evidenced in the Handmaid Tales. The quote given by Margaret Atwood is an answer to a question that she was asked by the interviewer about the role of the novel Handmaid Tales beyond entertainment (Walker 127). It is, therefore, ev
...ident that beyond entertaining her readers, this author believes that the novel is a critical analysis of what people experience in their daily lives and literature is used as a weapon of protest. The novel is a compilation of news articles around the world hence displaying the reality of the content. In general, the Handmaid Tales major themes express how a totalitarian Christian theocracy took over the government of the United States of America and named Gilead with the intention to make the upright country.
However, women end up experiencing problems such as sexual violence, lose control of their bodies, and banned from working. Sexual exploration is also prohibited, and feminists are hung in broad daylight to prevent any form of subversion (Walker 112). However, the ideas in Handmaid Tales are not applicable in th
current society since gender culture has significantly changed. Feminists’ numbers are rising day by day to fight for women affairs.
This has been effective, and women have taken the freedom to explore different areas such as politics. Traditionally, women have been forced on rules that are against their wills. However, it is not sufficient to rule that women freedom has been final and means such as literature should be used to condemn any acts of women subjugation.
