and testing positively for Cocaine in 1999 at the pan American Games, Javier Sotomayor is still recognized as a record holder and an Olympic medalist. He set the current indoor record of 2.43m on the 4th of March 1989 in Budapest and went on to win the gold medal in 1992 and the silver medal in 2000 once the suspension was reversed. Sotomayor claimed innocence, with Fidel Castro alleging that it was a frame-up by the Cuban-American mafia.

Due to his impressive career record, Sotomayor was allowed to compete at the 2000 Olympics despite his suspension being shortened by the IAAF. He achieved victory at the world championship in both 1993 and 1997, demonstrating a level of domination over the sport that is rarely seen in history. Furthermore, he currently holds 17 of the top 24 high jump records in the world, having cleared the 2m mark.

Sotomayor achieved the highest jump in history, reaching 2.44m. His last recorded height of 2.40m, which he accomplished at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina in 2005 has not been surpassed by anyone. Vyacheslav Voronin (London 2000), Stefan Holm (Madrid, 2005), and Ivan Ukhov (Piraeus 2009) are the only athletes to have matched this record-breaking height. Unfortunately, Sotomayor retired in 2001 after failing another drug test.
