An introduction to the systematic study of human society. A survey of human society focused on the introduction of culture, socialization, deviance and crime, sexuality, race and ethnicity, aging and groups on collective human behavior with special emphasis on social stratification, the social institutions, and the significance of social change.

• Students will develop a sociological perspective and improve oral and written communication skills. • Students will improve cognition (knowledge) and critical thinking skills. • Students will improve competency in the use of information technology. • Students will improve team building and collaborative learning skills. • Students will examine human society making real world connections and becoming a more thoughtful and responsible citizen.

All course information will be on the portal and it is essential that students check the portal and their Louisburg College email on a regular basis

All Louisburg College students are expected to uphold standards of honesty and integrity in their academic pursuits and are responsible for producing only their own work in all classes.

Students must complete all examinations and assignments without assistance from any source other than the writing lab or a tutoring session on campus. A student may not look at any other student's paper or any book or notes while taking exams unless allowed by the instructor Possession of notes while taking an exam is considered evidence of intention to cheat. Students may not talk to any other student while exams are being given without explicit permission from the instructor. These rules apply to all assignments (including papers) unless specified by the instructor.

Students must use their own words and must document the source of anything written in any paper or assignment. Direct quotations must be cited as such. Students must paraphrase material in such a way that the style and language are distinctively their own; merely rearranging words or making minimal changes in wording is plagiarism even if documented. Students must submit work that is their own. They may not submit work that has been produced by anyone else. They may not give their work to other students to plagiarize. Also, they are encouraged to get ideas or suggestions from other sources when the instructor permits. However, assistance from the writing lab or tutoring sessions at Louisburg College is allowed.

Students must not lie about absences or assignments to gain academic advantage. Students are responsible for asking for clarification from their instructors should they have questions about these violations. Violations will result in a conference with the instructor who will review evidence of the offense. The instructor has the authority to determine the severity of the penalty related to the course, such as zero (0) for the assignment or awarding an \"F\" for the final grade of the class according to the sanctions listed below

1.Dress that is neat, modest, and casual is the minimum requirement at all times in all public areas. 2.Hats, caps, do-rags, and other headgear must be removed when in classrooms, offices, and the dining hall. 3. \"Baggy\" pants or sloppy dress will not be permitted at any time. 4. Clothing that is provocative or contains obscene messages or messages that are contrary to the mission of the college will not be permitted.

The door is closed at the beginning time for the class. Do not knock under any circumstances.

IF YOU MISS MORE THAN 20% OF SCHEDULED CLASSES (6 FOR FALL SEMESTER), YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE CLASS!

The first four weeks of the semester are critical. Ten (10) points of extra credit will be given on the first exam to each student who has perfect attendance at the end of the first four weeks

There will be zero tolerance for talking while your instructor or other students who have been recognized are talking. Laughing at or demeaning someone else in class will not be tolerated. Profanity, vulgarity or disrespect of another person will not be tolerated.

Leaving the classroom before the class is over is an unexcused absence. If you have a legitimate reason for leaving early, discuss this with the instructor before class to determine if you will be excused. If there is a medical reason for leaving, bring a written excuse to the next class.

YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE CLASSROOM AND RETURN ONCE YOU HAVE BEGUN TAKING AN EXAM.

MUST BE TURNED OFF BEFORE ENTERING CLASS. First time offense: 10 points deducted from next exam grade. Second offense: 10 additional points will be deducted from the next exam grade and you will be dismissed from class with an unexcused absence for attempting to text or otherwise use your electronic devices in class. If you are dismissed from class a second time, you will be dropped from the class.

If you are absent on a day that an exam is scheduled, you will only be allowed to make it up under certain circumstances. If you are ill to the extent that you require medical care, written verification must be presented at the next class period to enable you to make up the exam. Your lowest exam grade will be dropped so a missed exam will be the exam grade that is dropped.

Reading the chapter, studying the \"Making the Grade\" section at the end of each chapter, the review of all study guides on the portal as well as any material distributed in class.

Sleeping, the appearance of sleeping, lowering of head or body, sprawled out body language is an automatic unexcused absence and you will be dismissed from class immediately. If you are dismissed from class a second time, you will be dropped from the class.

EVERYONE IS REQUIRED TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM TO PASS THIS CLASS

Must be current to be counted by mid-term. Extra credit assignments relating to current events will be given periodically and will allow the student to earn extra points on the next exam. These assignments must also be current to be counted by mid-term. Late work, if accepted, will be penalized when graded

Be prepared to participate in discussions/group projects and/or work online in every class. You will be expected to be open-minded, respectful of others and by semester's end, begin to use and understand the importance of the scientific method as opposed to opinion, emotion and other rhetoric.
