Budapest is Hungary's largest city and capital, serving as a hub for political affairs, cultural events, commerce, industry, and transportation. It spans 525 square kilometers in the central Carpathian Basin region between Szentendre and Csepel Island. The city features both a plain in the east and hills in the west that climb up to 500 meters above sea level. Budapest experiences a transitional climate that is temperate with weather influenced by both mild and rainy Transdanubian regions and variable Great Plain areas.
In Budapest, January sees the lowest temperatures while July and August are the warmest months. The city's population is around 1,886,000 which accounts for approximately 19% of Hungary's overall population. During the 1990s, rural areas underwent significant development with better water and sewage systems leading to a decrease in Budapest's population as people were less inclined to move away. Furthermore, high level
...s of smog and traffic congestion in suburban areas have driven many Budapest residents out of the capital.
The decrease in population is a result of the government’s stringent regulations regarding immigrants from less developed nations. Budapest's populace density stands at 3632 individuals per square kilometer, with Magyars (Hungarians) making up almost 92% of the total population. Although there are other minority communities such as Germans and Roma present, they constitute only a minor percentage of the overall populace.
The majority of Budapest's population is European, with only 8% being non-European. The European inhabitants include Slovaks, Greeks, Romanians, Chinese and Ukrainians. Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion in Budapest, followed by a significant portion of the population.
Despite the presence of other religions such as Calvinist, Lutheran, Greek Catholic and Atheism, Protestantism is deemed
as a minority. The Jewish population in Budapest is approximately 80,000. In relation to food traditions, Budapest locals strongly believe in serving chicken soup during weddings as it is believed to increase fertility for the bride.
One way to increase its effectiveness is to blend the soup with csiga, which are believed to have fertility-enhancing properties. Additionally, other delicacies such as gulyas, stuffed cabbage, millet, sweetened rice, and butter tortes are combined with the soup. Their culture also has traditional Christmas practices. On Luca's Name Day on December 13th, girls fashion tools out of 13 pieces of wood. They sit on a stool on December 24th and are able to identify the witch among them. They must promptly toss their stool in the fire to safeguard themselves from the witch.
Over fifty years ago, the area was primarily used for agriculture. However, industrialization eventually occurred. Despite this transformation, many residents of Budapest continued to work in agriculture. As part of their customs, girls would write the names of 13 boys on 13 pieces of paper and throw them into a fire. The paper that did not burn represented the girl's lucky future husband.
Budapest is the hub of commercial activity in Hungary, with nearly all industries concentrated in this city, leading to a decline in unemployment rates and favorable economic growth. Metalworking, engineering, textile, and chemical factories are important contributors to the economy. The city is witnessing a surge in electronics manufacturing and food processing industries. Additionally, the literacy rate in Budapest is incredibly high at 100%.
Budapest is home to notable universities and educational institutions like Lorand Eotvos University, Budapest Institute of Technology, and
Central European University, indicating the populace's high level of education. Furthermore, as Hungary's capital city, it accommodates the country's Parliamentary government comprising a President with a five-year tenure, a Prime Minister who selects and dismisses cabinet members, a unicameral National Assembly, and a constitutional court.
