Sex and gender have separate definitions. Sex refers to biological traits and preferences, while gender is influenced by society. Factors such as parents, teachers, influential adults, and media shape a child's gender development in present-day American society. Gender relations are crucial in the socialization process, where society teaches young individuals values and acceptable behavioral patterns related to their social roles.
Throughout American society, the roles of men and women have experienced changes. Gender, as a social identity based on sex, encompasses the role an individual is expected to fulfill. Cultural definitions of gender differ greatly across various societies. In American culture specifically, religious beliefs and prevailing circumstances have
...shaped women's roles throughout history. Girls are conditioned from birth to conform to their assigned roles, and as long as there were enough benefits, women typically felt content.
Children acquire ideas about feminine and masculine traits from their parents and society, but these ideas are primarily influenced by culture rather than biology. The prevailing paradigm in society shapes our perception of men, women, and their respective roles. Our cultural bias affects our decision-making processes.
Sexism is a consequence of the bias that is enforced through our process of enculturation.
