Sarojini Naidu, famously referred to as The Nightingale of India, was a gifted poet and exceptional child who championed the cause of Indian Independence. She played an instrumental role in the formation of the Indian Constitution.
Sarojini Naidu, a pioneer for women in politics, was born on February 13th, 1879 in Hyderabad, India. She achieved the remarkable accomplishments of serving as both President of the Indian National Congress and Governor of Uttar Pradesh state. Sarojini hailed from a Bengali Hindu Kulin Brahmin family, with her father, Agorenath Chattopadhyay, being a scientist who had earned his doctorate from Edinburgh University and went on to establish Ahemdabad College in Hyderabad State (later known as Nizam's College in Ahemdabad). Sarojini Naidu had two siblings, Birendranath and Harindranath. Birendranath was a revolutionary while Harindranath was a poet, dramatist, and actor. She finished her Matriculation examination from the University of Madras but took a four-year break to read various subjects. In 1895, she traveled to England for further studies at King's College London and Girton College, Cambridge.
Sarojini Naidu embarked on her career as a writer at the mere age of 12, impressing the Nawab of Hyderabad with her play entitled Maher Muneer. In 1905, she published a collection of poetry under the title "The Broken Exes", which received widespread praise from notable Indian politicians such as Gopal Krishna Gokhale.
In 1949, the woman became ill and was given a sleeping pill by her doctor to help her rest. Despite
her light comment about not wanting eternal sleep, she passed away in her sleep on March 2nd of that year.
