In the article "The Use of Reminiscence Therapy for the Treatment of Depression in Rural-Dwelling Older Adults," the importance of skilled nurses in assessing and developing interventions for the mental health needs of older adults, particularly those in long-term care facilities, is discussed. This therapy involves reflecting on past events, emotions, and thoughts to assist older adults in adapting to their current situations. Research demonstrates that older adults residing in rural areas encounter various challenges such as decreased functional and sensory abilities, limited finances, weaker social support, improper diet, isolation, lack of problem-solving skills, depression, and chronic diseases compared to their urban counterparts. Reminiscence therapy has been proven effective in preventing or reducing depression symptoms and increasing life satisfaction. It also aids in improving self-care practices and self-esteem while helping older adults cope w
...ith crises, losses, and life transitions by providing them with social and recreational benefits. Additionally, reminiscence therapy is cost-effective.
Recently,I conducted an interview with my 75-year-old grandmother who currently resides in Alas Vegas with my grandfather.Previously they lived in Elgin,Illinois, but a few years ago they decided to move to Alas Vegas to escape the cold weather and live with my aunt and her family.
My grandmother enjoys a variety of activities including cooking, shopping, swimming, watching Filipino soap operas, using Facebook, playing on her tablet, assisting in caring for her great-grandchildren, and occasionally trying her luck at casinos. Additionally, she loves sharing stories about her life which are often triggered by something she experiences through her senses. Although I have heard most of these stories before, it always warms my heart to see my grandmother's face light up with excitement as she reminisces abou
her childhood, raising six children, witnessing the growth of her grandchildren, and our family traditions. These passionate expressions from her storytelling moments demonstrate that she still possesses the heart of a child. However , I am aware that she harbors fears about the future . Personally , I believe storytelling serves as a coping mechanism for her by reaffirming that she lived a successful life filled with love and happiness. Consequently,I firmly endorse the use of reminiscence therapy in older adults due to its numerous benefits.
Reminiscence therapy is a valuable tool in enhancing communication and self-expression for older adults.By allowing them to share their experiences, this therapy not only increases their self-worth but also provides a sense of achievement. Moreover, reminiscence therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits that greatly improve the patients' quality of life ,including alleviating depression (Davis;Little 2002).Participating in reminiscence therapy as a nurse offers opportunities to gain insight into the patient's life, history, and achievements. This therapy fosters connections between past experiences and present behavior while building trust through genuine interest and care. A significant advantage is that reminiscence therapy does not entail medication, making it easily integrated into a patient's daily activities with minimal space and time requirements.
