Jeff Weise, the 15-year old who opened fire at Red Lake Senior High School in Minnesota on March 21, 2005, killing 9 people including his grandfather, his grandfather’s girlfriend, a school teacher, a security guard and five students, has been studied through his personal journal on LifeJournal.com, his Flash videos on the Newgrounds website and his debates on the neo-nazi forum in the US. These reveal that Weise was a very confused and troubled youth, likely due to the difficulties he faced in life.
Despite his brief life, Jeff amassed a significant amount of gloomy musings due to his difficult experiences. His childhood was likely impacted by his father's suicide in the late 1990s, and his mother currently resides in a nursing home due to brain damage she sustained from a car accident caused by her alcoholism.
Jeff Weise shared a home w
...ith his grandfather, a 58-year old police officer in Red Lake, Minnesota, and the grandfather’s 32-year old wife. They resided in a community with a significant Native American population, among whom Jeff himself belonged as an Ojibwa tribe member. Although his Native American heritage was unusual given his beliefs, Jeff was a neo-nazi who admired Hitler's racial ideology from the 1940s and opposed interracial mixing.
Jeff had a strong infatuation with Hitler, who seemed to replace the father figure in his life. This led him to extensively study Hitler and Nazism, ultimately expressing his allegiance to the Nazi party. Jeffrey's unconventional appearance - regularly dressed in a long, black trench coat - resulted in him being frequently bullied by his peers. Additionally, the young man had an affinity for extreme art and violence - often creatin
violent flash videos and being a fan of Marilyn Manson. These extreme interests caused concern for many American parents.
While we do not believe that Manson's music is responsible for school shootings, it may impact the outlook on life of individuals with weaker minds, such as Jeff Weise. Jeff, also known as 'Regret', created and posted violent short films online with murder and death as their central themes.
The initial of the two videos features a clown and another person encountering each other beneath a street lamp. The camera shifts downward to show their feet when, suddenly, an abundance of blood is seen cascading down the screen, signifying the conclusion of the short film. The second video involves a man who ignites his cigarette, retrieves a firearm from his bag, and randomly shoots individuals on the street. It is incredibly disturbing.
Jeff Weise's fate was similar to that of the protagonist in his film. On March 21st, he killed nine people at Red Lake Senior High School in Minnesota after previously killing his grandfather and his grandfather's girlfriend, stealing a security vest, pistol, shotgun, and police car. He encountered an unarmed security guard at the school entrance with a metal detector and shot them. Additionally, he threw a grenade at a police car and shot a Ku Klux Klan member in the head before ultimately ending his own life by shooting himself in the head.
Despite the significant investment in safety measures, including metal detectors, there is still a false sense of security regarding violence and school shootings. The perpetrator smiled and waved goodbye to victims before randomly shooting people at a school. Upon entering a classroom, he engaged
police officers resulting in injuries on both sides. It is unknown how severe the perpetrator's wounds were, but ultimately he took his own life by pointing the gun towards his chin and pulling the trigger. This tragic event highlights the need for increased awareness and action regarding school safety.
Despite the presence of metal detectors in schools, determined psychopaths like Jeff can still carry out school shootings. Even if there is an unarmed guard, as demonstrated in this particular case. The prevention of such tragedies lies in addressing the root cause before students even develop such violent thoughts or become psychopaths. This requires a change in American society, where guns should not hold as much influence as they do now. Thus, the American gun policy needs to be revised in order to prevent future school shootings.
