1. Consider Your Audience • Gather and analyze information. • Consider culturally diverse backgrounds. 2. Select Your Topic • Should Be: o Relevant to the interests and expectations of your listeners. o Appropriate to audience and the assignment. o Interest you. o Challenging. o Important. o Take into account knowledge audience already has of topic. 3. Determine Your Purpose • General and Specific Purpose. 4. Develop Your Central Idea • NOT a phrase or question. o Direct and Specific o Single Idea o Audience-centered 5. Preview Main Ideas • Blueprint previews your main ideas and the order you plan to discuss them. • Usually at the end of the introduction.

• To inform - To share information with listeners by defining, describing, or explaining a thing, person, place, concept, process, or function. • To persuade - To change or reinforce a listener's attitude, belief, value, or behavior. • To entertain - To help listeners have a good time by getting them to relax, smile, and laugh.

• It is what you want your audience to do at the end of your speech. • Three Rules to Formulate Specific Purposes: o Use words that refer to observable or measureable behavior. o Limit the specific purpose to a single idea. o Make sure your specific purpose reflects the interests, expectations, and knowledge level of your audience.

o Be a complete declarative sentence. o Use direct, specific language. o Be a single idea. o Be an audience-centered idea.
