Five years ago, during my junior high school days, the fashion trend was to wear baggy and oversized clothing such as t-shirts that went down to our knees and jeans that were several sizes too big. Although this was popular among everyone at school, my grandmother wanted me to look presentable and did not allow me to dress like a street hoodlum. As I was new to taking care of myself back then, she selected all of my clothes without any input from me. She believed it was important for me to make a fashion statement by looking good while at school. Despite her teachings, sagging clothes made us feel older and more popular among our peers - even though parents disapproved of it - which made it more enjoyable for us. However, my grandmother never approved of this behavior. I recall one warm day during rec

ess when we played football in the schoolyard with classmates.Wearing my cherished black tee, although I knew it wasn't the most flattering, I played a game and threw a long touchdown pass. Suddenly, Sherri Crowe lunged at me - renowned for her strength - and tore off the left sleeve of my shirt. Adhering to the school's dress code was mandatory for an optimal education experience. Upon seeing the torn sleeve, my teacher promptly sent me to the principal's office where they called my grandmother for another change of clothes. Although I hadn't done anything wrong explicitly, my appearance had still caused trouble.

While anxiously waiting in the office for fresh attire from my grandmother, I noticed that she brought me a disturbingly shrunken t-shirt as a replacement clothing option.

tight clothing has been associated with homosexuality and resulted in derogatory name-calling such as “faggot,” “gay guy,” and “queer.” When I received a small and uncommon shirt, I requested a different one but was unsuccessful. With reluctance, I removed my torn shirt and wore the clean but tiny t-shirt. Walking to class, I felt anxious about maintaining my dignity. Upon entering the room, I prepared myself for judgmental stares. However, everyone instantly directed their attention towards me and started laughing together.

Feeling terrible, I opted to relocate to the back of the classroom. Despite being separated from my peers, I could still hear snickers emanating from a group of arrogant girls situated on my left, including Burrell 3. Following an hour-long lecture on multiplication by our teacher, I was grateful to hear the bell signaling the end of school. As soon as chairs were stacked up, we were free to grab our bags and leave. However, upon exiting out into the schoolyard, it appeared that every single student in attendance was subjecting me to humiliation. Even John "Hulk" Hogan - my primary tormentor - taunted me about my shirt. Though I tried ignoring his remarks, they truly stung.

After being teased for my clothing choice, I decided to retaliate against Hulk. He often tried to impress girls with humor, despite wearing old and dirty boots from the previous school year. When he made a comment about my small t-shirt, I responded by saying, "Don't worry about my shirt; my shoes are clean!" This caused others to laugh at Hulk's boots. Seeing their reaction, Hulk looked at me with pity before quickly leaving. The fact that the laughter

was aimed at him instead of me left me feeling ecstatic as I walked home, eagerly anticipating telling my grandmother the story.

As soon as I arrived home, I sat her down at the kitchen table and recounted my day's events. When I finished, she embraced me with warmth and expressed admiration for handling conflicts rationally rather than aggressively. She stated that she was proud of me and acknowledged my fast maturation. Knowing that she approved of me brought immense gratification.

Confident and sporting another small t-shirt, the following day I entered the classroom wondering what I should say next.
