The Ordinary World
It was a typical Saturday.
On September 12, 2015, the peach days parade in Brigham City, Utah marked the start of a memorable day. I eagerly participated in the parade as part of the B.E. United float. As the parade time approached, excitement grew.
Having been informed, we were excitedly looking forward to our moment in the parade. Placed on a float pulled by a red pickup truck, our intention was to throw candy. Regrettably, throwing candy from the float was not allowed. Nevertheless, the parade was pleasurable and I had an incredible time with my friends.
After exploring the other booths with my friends and family at peach days, we took a brief break at home before returning. Once back, we decided to take advantage of the free carnival games offered by local
...companies. It was around 3:30 when I suddenly realized that I had a soccer game scheduled for 6:30. Initially, I assumed it would be like any other regular soccer game, but little did I know that it wouldn't turn out that way.
The Call to Adventure
I went through the warm-up routine as if it were a typical soccer game and surprisingly felt confident. However, approximately 20 minutes into the match with the score still tied at 0-0, I leaped to clear the ball from the penalty box. Unfortunately, one of my own teammates slid beneath me causing me to execute a front flip and awkwardly land on my left arm.
Recent events left me bewildered and halted my perception. Amongst a group of six children, I experienced an abrupt snap that led to a scream of agony. The excruciating pain was unparalleled,
surpassing any previous experiences. Upon inspecting my arm, I was met with a repulsive sight - the fracture had caused my humerus bone to break into two pieces, protruding from either side of my arm. As a result, my screams intensified further.
Refusing the Call to Action
The referee assessed me with a disapproving look, ready to continue with the game, until he caught sight of my arm. He urgently blew his whistle, signaling a halt to the match, and beckoned both my coach and father onto the field. They engaged in a discussion, unsure whether my shoulder was dislocated and whether I should be moved off the field. Despite my protests, pleading that they not relocate me due to excruciating pain, they ultimately decided to keep me where I was and request emergency assistance. Those ten minutes felt like the longest period of time in my entire life.
The soccer field where I was playing is called Perry Centennial Soccer Field. Initially, they mistakenly went to Perry Park and contacted my dad saying, "We are at Perry Park and we can't find you here." My dad promptly corrected them, stating, "We are at Perry Centennial Soccer Field." Subsequently, they arrived at Perry Centennial and addressed my medical requirements by administering an intravenous drip containing numbing medication.
Placed on an orange board, I experienced severe arm pain and was quickly taken to the hospital via ambulance. Despite feeling like only a brief moment had passed, the duration of the journey itself totaled approximately 15 minutes. Subsequently, we waited for another 15 minutes in the reception area until there was an opening in the emergency
room.
Following the incident, I was brought to the radiology center for x-rays which revealed a fracture in my left humerus bone. Since Brigham City Hospital does not offer casting services for humerus bones, I had to be transferred to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City for treatment. In order to make the necessary arrangements, my father contacted an orthopedic surgeon whom he knew from his high school days.
According to him, I wouldn't need to go to Primary Children's as he could solve it. The only drawback was the wait until Monday to visit him. Therefore, they securely bandaged it with gauze and a sling, and provided me with strong pain medication before sending me off. I pondered how I would manage basic daily activities with such a massive inconvenience to deal with.
Entering my parent's minivan right after leaving the hospital was a challenge for me. The pain persisted even when I attempted to sit in our incredibly cozy reclining chair. During the night, I would sob while sitting in the chair, feeling immense pain and uncertain if sleep would come.
The next day, a wave of visitors consisting of my friends and family overwhelmed me with an excessive amount of sugary gifts over the span of two weeks. From my grandparents to my soccer teammates, every person I knew came to visit and brought treats.
Encountering the Guide
Monday arrived, signaling the beginning of school for everyone else.
I sought medical attention to assess the condition of my arm and determine if it was treatable. At this stage, my doctor deliberated between using a cast or opting for surgery, which involved implanting metal plates around the fractured bone
to enhance its strength and prevent reoccurrence. Ultimately, the doctor decided that a heavily reinforced cast would be sufficient to realign the bone. Although I was initially displeased with this choice, it ultimately proved effective in rectifying the issue. Following the application of the cast, I experienced nausea as a result of the potent pain relievers like Percocet and other prescribed medications.
Tests, Allies, Enemies
My parents and I exited the building, and upon witnessing their newfound confidence, my dad departed for work while my mom accompanied me home. Navigating around the house without my dad proved to be a formidable challenge. I struggled to even arise from my recliner. In an attempt to improve my situation, they attempted to rearrange the television.
Despite my hopes for a pleasant day to ward off boredom, school only added more stress and made my life harder. The injury I experienced was not the usual forearm or wrist break, but rather a fracture in the humerus bone, which is connected to the shoulder.
I had a severe and complete break, not just a fracture, due to a cyst within my bone. The medical community still has limited knowledge about the formation and causes of cysts, making them largely mysterious. It is unclear whether there is a genetic component to cysts or how they are acquired. To gain more information, medical professionals planned to conduct tests comparing similarities between myself and others who have experienced cysts.
Because my parents didn't want to pay for anything that wouldn't benefit us, they decided not to continue with the genetic doctors. As a result, I encountered challenges in navigating within our home during
the next few weeks. Despite this, my doctor reassured me that I would be able to go to school starting from the upcoming Monday. Nevertheless, I remained uncertain about my capability to actually attend.
Although the cast made it challenging for me to stand for extended periods, attending school would have been impossible without my friends' support. They not only guided me to my classes but also protected my arm from accidental bumps. The intermediate school now seemed even more intimidating with its cramped hallways, crowded areas, and strict teachers.
The list is endless. My broken arm prevented me from participating in numerous activities that I enjoyed. Soccer, basketball, and other beloved activities were no longer viable options for me. Despite my strong desire to engage in these fun pursuits, my physical condition simply couldn't allow it.
The Reward (Seizing The Sword)
After a week of breaking my arm, a massive gathering took place at my house, consisting of my soccer teammates and friends. Approximately 40 people gathered in my backyard, all to celebrate and support me. The event was incredibly enjoyable, and I received numerous amazing items that I still possess to this day. Amongst the gifts were two posters with well wishes and a soccer ball adorned with the signatures of everyone present.
They also provided me with two huge bags of candy that contributed to my extensive assortment of sugar. This greatly assisted me in navigating through this challenging phase of my life. Additionally, the majority of them autographed my cast, resulting in over fifty signatures adorning it. Subsequently, I was able to attend school regularly and cope with the presence
of my substantial cast. Following a duration of four weeks, the extensive cast was replaced with a smaller one that only encompassed my humerus bone. Consequently, attending school became progressively less challenging with each passing day.
Even now, I am grateful for all of my friends and soccer teammates who visited my house on that Saturday in September 2015.
