Topic #1: Newton’s Laws

Newton’s Laws consist of three laws that describe motion. The first law states that an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force, and that an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. This law relates to the mousetrap racecar because the racecar moved when an unbalanced force was acted upon it by using the string to pull it forward and the mousetrap racecar stopped because the unbalanced force of friction.

There are a few different types of energy used when the mousetrap racecar is set off, but energy is never destroyed because of the Law of Conservation of Energy.

Before the mousetrap racecar is set off, potential energy is used. Energy is stored in the wrapped up string, and when it is set off the mousetrap now has kinetic energy because it is in motion. Another form of energy that was involved is mechanical energy, which is the sum of all the kinetic and potential energy. Since there was potential and kinetic energy at a higher level than atoms, there was mechanical energy.

There are three different classes of levers, but in my mousetrap racecar a third class lever is used. The mechanical advantage is under one. The lever multiplied force while the wheel and axle multiplied distance. The mousetrap racecar I used was small so I needed extra force and I wanted it to go far.

Topic #4: Summary

While building the mousetrap racecar I learned how levers and wheel and axles work. I encountered a few problems during the process of building my racecar. One of which was that I broke my lever and had to rig it a different way. I was able to get the racecar to work. Another problem was that when I wound up the string it would get caught, to fix it I would move the axle. My mousetrap racecar went very far, which was a strength, but because it was small it could not carry much weight. Another strength of the racecar was that it was very fast. If I were to build a mousetrap racecar again I would build it to carry more weight, but still be able to go far and fast.
