Definition

The first stage of the cell cycle. Period before cell division occurs. A cell grows to it’s mature size, makes a copy of it’s DNA called replication divide Inter=Between The cell doubles in size and produces all structures needed for cell division

Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. Spindle fibers attach to the centromere and the centriole.

The chromosomes split. The “sister” chromatids separate to each end of the cell. Spindle fibers, anchored by the centrioles begin to push the cell apart.

The cells nucleus divides into 2 new nuclei. 1 copy of the DNA is distributed into each of the two daughter cells

Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase:

Chromosomes form. Centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell. Spindle fibers begin to appear. Nuclear membrane begins to disappear.

Cells begin to split. Nuclear membrane begins to reform on each side of the cell.

Cell membrane pinches in center of the cell.Cells split forming two genetically identical daughter cells, each cells begins to grow to start the process over again.
