The film unforgiving tells the tale of a former killer who embarks on a journey in order to kill two criminals and later confronts a law driven sheriff who controls a town with brute force.

Towards the end of the film the protagonist confronts the main villain and kills him. Before dying the man complains that he did not deserve to die the way he did and in response the protagonist replies that "Deserves got nothing to do with it".

This line has left a legacy in cinema and it closely relates to the novel Mercy Among the Children. The main character Sydney, is constantly rejected and hated by the society that he lives in, but he has a different approach as to how to handle these tough situations. Citizens within the society continually mock and fight Sydney, but he chooses to hold back because he believes that the people who are against him will be judged by a higher power and will face judgment later on.

Sydney does his best to help the people in his town and his family. While many characters look for reward, respect and money. Sydney is fine with what he has; he does not feel the need to obtain more and does not try to obtain respect, money or reward using brute force.

Sydney shows desire to end conflict whether or not he started it, all he wants is a peaceful relationship amongst others. Sydney is a calm, intellectual and cautious individual throughout the novel. He gives to others and does not ask for anything in return.<

align="justify">He instead does his best to help others and guide them on a path in which they can do good like he does. Ones of the scenes in which Sydney shows kindness towards others, s when he give Sampson Voter the Christmas basket, despite Sampson constants threats and repeated attack.

As Sampson prepares for another attack, he breaks down and calls himself and failure. Synced despite being attacked and insulted, comforts Voter and tells him that he is a good man and that he has worked hard to support his family.

Sydney tells Voter that "tell your children that these groceries came to them because of who you are and what you have done for them" (55). By giving Voter the groceries and praising Sampson, Sydney shows that everyone not matter what their state is, everybody works hard and everyone deserves to be appreciated.

Sydney also shows that he does not care about justice. This is shown when is accused of murdering Trend Pit. Everyone in town believes that Sydney had killed Trend, but Sydney does not stand up for himself; and takes blame for the murder.

Lyle is enraged by Sydney silence, but Sydney confirms that everything will be okay.

Sydney believes that faith will allow people to see the truth and tells Lyle that "Don't worry the truth will out" (80) as Sydney is still accused of killing Trend, people start to show more wrath towards him. Sydney is beaten and assaulted by others in order to make him confess to the murder, but he does not break and continues to accept the torment and torture that he receives.

Sydney knows that the

truth cannot be kept hidden forever and people will find out eventually. Lastly Sydney shows that he care about what he deserves by not defending himself against the rumors of the stolen smelts.

Even though Matt Pit was the one that stole the smelts, Sydney is blames for stealing them and is interrogated by Officer Morrison. Sydney does not talk back and or defend himself which arouses more suspicion upon him. Later, Sydney agrees to replace the smelts and give them to Connie, even though he did not steal them.

When Lyle assures him that they will be paid back, Sydney replies that "it is never s matter of paying people back.

It always causes you more sorrow in the end" (50). This is an example of how Sydney does not care about being accused of stealing the smelts and replacing them as long as he can resolve the conflict and avoid making things worse. In the end, Sydney is a character that shows that no matter how hard you try in life to be good or help others, what you get or what you have has nothing o do with what you deserve.

As a result of Kidney's personality and acceptance of social order, he feels enlightened and does not fear any type of stress, problem or desire. He believes that there is always a way to solve an issue and that everyone will find their own way.

Sydney care for others and knows that everyone is capable of doing good. He appreciates what he has in life and does not have any intention in gaining more material, wealth or objects. Sydney accepts the
