Human Population Changes in Survival
I. Abstract
The objective of this lab was to examine the impact of changes in human mortality and survivorship on population growth.
II. Introduction
Advancements in medicine and lifestyle modifications have contributed to longer lifespans in the current population. The care for seniors has improved with government funding and support systems, and there are initiatives aimed at assisting financially disadvantaged mothers raising their children. However, concerns arise regarding the sustainability of a growing population on the global environment, particularly with regards to plant growth and air quality.
III. Materials and Methods
To assess population growth in Powell, Tennessee (my hometown), I conducted a study at a local cemetery. The data were collected from headstones, noting the gender and age at death of each individual. These findings were used to determine the number of male and female deaths within s
...pecific centuries as well as their average ages at death. In addition, recent death records from local newspapers were included using the same criteria.
IV.Results
Results: After conducting research at the local cemetery and reviewing weekly papers, I compiled all recorded information into Excel spreadsheets for presenting results. These charts can be found in this report.
V.Discussion: The ages of death vary within each date category but have shown significant increases from century to centuryVI.Conclusion: The advancements in technology and medical discoveries have greatly improved the treatment of previously fatal diseases, indicating progress in our society. However, efforts to control population growth are slow and often neglected despite the millions of children born annually. Additionally, there is a tendency to prolong the lives of elderly individuals even when they no longer possess mental clarity, which I believe is driven mor
by capitalism rather than compassion. Unless effective measures are put in place to regulate this ongoing population surge, its consequences will persist. This rapid growth not only poses environmental risks but also imposes hardships on those born into poverty with limited opportunities for betterment. While it may be challenging for those who wish to continue their heritage, it is crucial for us to consider what we are truly passing on.
