There are many holidays and festivals in India that commemorate the country's diverse cultural heritage.
India celebrates three national holidays: Independence Day, Republic Day, and Gandhi Jayanti. In addition to these, local festivals differ depending on the religious and linguistic demographics of each state or region. Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, Holi, Dussehra, Eid ul-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Mawlid an-Nabi are some popular religious festivals celebrated alongside Christmas and Good Friday for Christians. Islamic sects observe Muharram to mark their new year. The annual Republic Day Parade in 2004, featuring soldiers of the Madras Regiment, is a celebration of National holidays in India.
