After reading the documentary “The Lost Children of Rockdale County”, I feel shocked and disturbed! Too many American families aren’t paying attention to their children and it is highly probable that because of this lack of interest and decrease in behavior guidance, young children are getting involved in too many destructive activities that will most likely negatively affect the rest of their lives. I’m genuinely surprised that children as young as twelve and thirteen years old are this promiscuous and more astounded that they are so willing to divulge personal information about their behavior with such relative ease.

It is extremely important that documentaries of this nature are being observed by caring adults who can intervene and make critical changes in high priority areas, such as Rockdale County in order to see to it that these children get th

e respective and critically important help they need, such as professional counseling and medical treatment which can make a drastic improvement with these young individuals. It is interesting to learn that children will get themselves involved in a damaging lifestyle in order to persuade others to find them fascinating and exciting.

Throughout history, parents have taught their children to be respectable and to avoid drugs, alcohol and promiscuous activities in order to be recognized as a descent and moral character in society. Where did parents go wrong in making decisions that would so drastically affect their children? It is in my opinion that parents are guilty! For their own reasons, adults are willing to sacrifice the safety and health of their children in order to be more prosperous in their lives.

and the dads have in recent decades become more negligent in overseeing the welfare of their families as more and more women take on careers instead of nurturing their children. In the documentary, we learn that parents are willing to confess that they are too tired or busy to keep up with their children’s activities. With this type of uncaring parenting it is easy to see where children are going wrong. Unprotected sex and the use of drugs is highly destructive to children who admit their need to fit in with others.

They admit in partaking in these harmful events, knowing they are wrong and it is terribly sad when they admit that they desire discipline for the mere sake of being noticed. Many children report that their parents aren’t involved in their daily routines. According to a story from Frontline, children are taking their own lives due to the loss of communication and lack of attention they receive in their adolescence years. In the documentary “The Lost Children of Rockdale County”, it is certain that they are asking for help.

In order for Rockdale County to improve in the monitoring of their children, there needs to be even more attention brought to this important matter. Parents need to be held responsible in most cases in alcohol and drug related offences occur and should be forced to identify the bad habits of their offspring. In order to make necessary changes in adolescent behavior, all parents should be aware of their children’s location at all times and should monitor all activities they are involved in.

There should be at least on parent closely monitoring their children’s activities at all

times. Not only does this documentary allow parents a genuine glimpse at what their children are partaking in but it brings to surface the fact that many of these parents aren’t paying attention and should be. In the Frontline story, (Frontline), a Peabody award winning documentary, “The Lost Children of Rockdale County” an open discussion with a high risk group of teenagers express their feeling on the critical matter of a high syphilis rate and their involvement in dangerous habits.

I find it surprising that they are aware that their parents changes from devoted authority figures to ones who were more relaxed in what activities their young children were partaking in. I also find it very interesting and disturbing that over 75% of parents work outside the home, leaving their children unattended and uncared for. Children who took part in the documentary expressed their concern in being neglected so it is highly probable that if parents would stand back and take a look at themselves and their own neglect that they would make positive changes in their homes in order to make improvements.

The information from the documentary is directly related to our own text book reading since we learn from our books that children are at high risk for disease and early pregnancies if they aren’t given the attention they so desperately desire and need to grow up to be responsible adults. Parenting styles should include all aspects that are required in raising healthy and happy children. Love and attention should be the center of attention when raising children and should never be taken lightly. Promiscuous sexual behavior where teenagers are concerned, should be avoided.

Also, it

is up to parents, as well as society to monitor the soliciting of drugs in our own communities. Rockdale County is just one area in America that was observed. There is much work that is needed in holding community meeting, workshops and school events where the importance of the safety and welfare of young adults are specifically addressed where an audience can band together in making specific and crucial changes in the rearing and monitoring of our children. There is no need for people to feel discouraged about this important cause since we can make changes.

We can turn children around and point them in the proper direction. It will take everyone joining together, voicing are concerns and most important, monitoring adolescent behavior in order to see to it that these necessary and positive changes are put into action. Parents can learn how to be better at raising their children and society will reap the benefits of this more affectionate, caring and responsible group of children who will grow up to teach their own children good moral ethics and be active in good child rearing.

Children aren’t asked to be brought into this world! It is up to each of us to do our part in protecting the young. Talk to children. Spend time with them and lead them to success and happiness. It’s time to stop ignoring our offspring and start being an important part of their lives. Many will one day look back and realize their mistakes but for some it will be too late. Children need our love, attention and support so let’s start giving it to them!
