In the world where an assortment of technology is emerging and is changing not only how human beings live their lives, it also extends to how businesses are conducted for a more efficient and effective operations. From the simplifications of computing that evolved from the bulky desktop computer to the handy tablets, to the ever improving sophistications of mobile phone usage such as the candy bar handsets to smartphones, technology is now evolving faster that the evolution of human beings are taking place.

With these evolution, comes a variety of technological breakthroughs that can be used in both lifestyle and business such as the Internet, Bluetooth, infrared, voice-driven commands and navigation, mobile photography and videography, short messaging system or SMS, mobile GPS, and wireless area network technol

Significantly, a new frontier that goes with wireless area networks is the perimeter around an individual such as the personal area network or PAN. Significantly, PAN technology maximizes the use of mobile phones and offers three (3) main approaches, namely: “Bluetooth offers data rates of up to 3 Mbps and ranges of up to 100 m, with far lower power consumption; the 802. 15. , that goes even further than Bluetooth in exchanging speed for power as well as it offers data rates of up to 250 kbps, and can easily support links with a very low duty cycle, which is suitable for deployment in battery-powered devices that must survive for up to a year between charges; and the ultra-wide band (UWB) radios emit low-power, high-bandwidth pulses that deliver data rates comparable to wired Ethernet that make it ideal for replacing short wired links,

like those found among PC peripherals and in home theaters” (Hackman, 2006).

Consequently, there are a few establishments or networks that can find PAN beneficial for the effectiveness and efficiency of operations given the speed, simplicity, and convenience that it promises for work. To name a few, PAN has been utilized in hospitals or health administrations, warehousing, and even government service.

In the paper of Tam Vu Ngoc entitled “Medical Applications of Wireless Networks”, Tam discussed that “coming along with the urgent development of wireless technology, wireless devices have invaded the medical area with a wide range of capability by not only improving the quality of life of patients and doctor-patient efficiency but enables clinicians to monitor patients remotely and give them timely health information, reminders, and support that is potentially extending the reach of health care by making it available anywhere, anytime.

Wireless Personal Area Network technologies, WiMAX, WiFi and Zigbee have been considered with standards of use in wireless medical applications and location of wireless network in a healthcare system” (Tam, 2008). Consequently, PAN technology is also applicable in warehousing operations wherein technologies such as the “optical and radio-frequency product-labelling technologies that examines various devices and systems for reading labels and integrating stock control into back-office databases then finds the goods within the warehouse, from simple address labels to radar positioning and inertial navigation, considering both operator-based and guided vehicle handling systems. ” (Connolly, 2008).

In some warehouses, mobile phone photography is even maximized by taking pictures of inventory and sending it to a remote computer system for photo documentation purposes. As for the utilization of PAN technology in

government system, the Georgia Technology Authority has even “established standards with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers or IEEE wherein the use of wireless strategy should comply with the most current version of the IEEE 802. 15 standard because many government entities have already started using wireless technology with such standards needed to be considered upon initial deployment for the government to provide quality service delivery and support as well as an effective and efficient operations management” (GTA, 2006).

As a promising technology already being utilized by certain establishments, PAN also promises feasibility for those individuals planning to distribute such to the open market. However, the mere fact that such technology is already being incorporated in a portfolio of add-on services of various companies such as those consumer electronics, information technology, and mobile phone manufacturing, engaging with such offer may be difficult given the size of such competition. It will become a sort of backward integration in the market wherein simple applications of more complex devices would already have intellectual property rights or patents for these technologies.

As such, it is a valid opinion that the future of PAN has already been achieved through the available technologies that already incorporates its functionality wherein mobile phones can already transmit significant data through Bluetooth or infrared or wireless network technology already being maximized through various available routers where everyone can gain access to. In this manner, personal area network technology can no longer stand by its own in as far as concentrated focus for its used is concerned. It may just be as beneficial if individuals use it personally as how it is intended,

which is why it is referred to as a personal area network in the first place.
