History of the Federal Aviation Administration Essay Example
The Federal Aviation Administration has a long and constantly changing history. The Commerce Act of 1926 was passed to address regulations related to air traffic, pilot certifications, airways, and navigation. This led to the creation of a new division within the Department of Commerce under William P. McCracken Jr.'s leadership. In 1934, this division changed its name to the Aeronautics Branch under the Bureau of Air Commerce, highlighting the importance of the nation's aviation system. Then, in 1938, responsibilities were transferred under the Civil Aeronautics Act and the Commerce Department became an independent agency called the Civil Aeronautics Act.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt divided the authority into two entities in 1940: the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) and the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB). The CAA was responsible for Air Traffic Control, Airman/Aircraft Certificat
...ion, Safety Enforcement, and Airway Development. On the other hand, the CAB oversaw Safety Regulations, Accident Investigation, and Economic Regulations for Airlines. However, due to an increase in mid-air collisions caused by jet travel, the Federal Aviation Act of 1958 was enacted. This act established the Federal Aviation Agency under Elwood R.'s leadership as the sole entity responsible for a unified civil-military system while retaining the functions of its predecessor agencies.
Quesada was appointed as the first Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 1967, when it replaced the Federal Aviation Agency. In response to increasing terrorism concerns, the FAA adopted proactive measures such as creating the Department of Homeland Security to ensure national safety. As a result, the FAA has grown into a significant federal entity with authority over almost all aviation matters.
