Family preservation as a concept can be said to be the arrangement whereby families that are going through trying times are helped. As a concept, it involves a short-term intervention whereby the children are taken into custody while the parents are monitored until they are deemed able to parent the children and function well as a family. Generally, although the purpose for family preservations is positive, the people involved always feel as if they are being denied.
This is because of the idea that they would be separated as a family. In family preservation, the morale behind this act is said to be “in the best interest of the child”. What this means is that the separation is needed so that the child would not be exposed to some things which might come as a direct fla
...w in parenting of the child. Apart from this, family preservation becomes necessitated so that the child can enjoy love, care and affection like other children.
For example, in the case where one or both of the parents are substance users, it becomes imperative that the child be kept in the program so that he, she or they would not be exposed to the substance too. Family preservation has a lot of effect on the child. This is because often times than not, the child that is kept in the program is already used to the violent behaviors exhibited by either or both of the parents. This makes children develop a sort of withdrawn attitude to people and fearful.
In such cases, through care and show of affection and love, the child is introduced to a whole new world – a world
where he can play and relate with other children in the program. The child is made to know that at least someone somewhere cares and this brings him/her out of his/her shells. Thus, there is an attachment that is built in the children because of the new environment and the care that is shown to him or her. Generally, there are different types of family based services. One of them is the permanency planning.
As an organization, it does major things which is to return foster children to their parent’s homes and to terminate the rights of parents that are irresponsible, placing the children under adoption care. Here, we can see the relationship between these two agencies and this is in line with their job description. Both of them are concerned with the care of the child but they differ in the sense that in that family prevention do not totally aim at terminating the right of parenting, rather, they seek to speedily resolve family issues so that the families can be reunited.
