Many countries are adopting the smart card to replace their paper-based identification cards. Malaysia has taken the lead with its introduction of the Malaysia Card (MyKad), which is a smart national identification card that combines features such as applying for a passport, accessing healthcare services, and using ATMs.
The UTAUT model, which stands for Unified Theory Acceptance and Use on Technology, was studied. It comprises of various variables such as performance expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, and intention to use. The factor of effort expectancy is not part of the UTAUT model because using the MyKad IC does not involve any usability issues or effort; it only requires inserting the card into a card reader and scanning the thumb.
Based on the research, five hypotheses have been made regarding ITU MyKad. These hypotheses suggest that performance ex
...pectancy, social influence, facilitating condition, and perceived credibility will positively affect ITU MyKad, while anxiety will have a negative impact on it. The most significant positive influence on MyKad holders' intention to use the card is observed credibility. Users may refuse to utilize MyKad if they perceive that the card lacks credibility.
Concerns about privacy infringement have led to strong opposition against the implementation of identity cards. Additionally, Malaysian citizens have displayed little interest in using the MyKad, citing reasons such as awareness of its security features and benefits, but also acknowledging its lack of convenience and social support. Furthermore, they express apprehension about the potential expenses resulting from loss or damage. To improve acceptance and usage of the MyKad IC, five recommendations are proposed by the research.
The purpose of this research
is to create awareness and address issues related to performance expectancy and the use of MyKad IC. It also aims to address the influence of social factors and alleviate concerns about potential loss or damages. Lastly, the research aims to identify the acceptance of Malaysians towards the factors that influence their intention to use MyKad, so that recommendations can be made to the government for increasing its acceptance.
