Zika Virus Essay Examples
The Zika virus, first discovered in 1947, is a mosquito-borne infection that has recently been linked to serious birth defects. The virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito and can cause severe fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis. In addition, it has been linked to microcephaly (abnormally small heads) in newborns and other neurological problems such as Guillain-Barré syndrome. Though most cases are mild with symptoms lasting for several days up to a week, the World Health Organization declared Zika an international public health emergency due to its potential association with neurological disorders among newborns. While there is currently no vaccine or treatment available for Zika infection, preventive measures are recommended by health organizations across the globe. These include avoiding travel to areas where cases of Zika have been reported; wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants outdoors; using insect repellent containing DEET; sleeping under bed nets while traveling; and eliminating standing water around homes which can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. It is important that pregnant women take extra precautions if they must travel to countries affected by the outbreak due to the risk of transmission from mother to fetus during pregnancy or delivery. If you think you may have contracted the virus after travelling or being bitten by an infected mosquito it is important seek medical care immediately ” especially if pregnant – so that proper tests can be done promptly in order assess any risks associated with Zika infection during pregnancy .
