The theory of Adlerian Therapy is based on a value-oriented view of humans not only as individuals, but as social beings capable of living as a community and working to contribute to the common welfare.

Adlerian therapy is a growth model which emphasizes on positive view of human nature and that human beings are in control of their own fate and not victims of the fate. Adlerian theory stresses on birth order, individual way of life, social interest and concept pertaining principles of superiority and inferiority.

The scientific medicine paradigm of the twentieth century was so dominant that it was referred to as orthodox or conventional medicine.  While alternatives to medical doctors ranging from home remedies to prayer to chiropractors were often used, they were considered to be unorthodox or unconventional medicine.
