Analyse how two body systems interrelate to perform a named function/functions. Even though the systems may seem very separate in their activities the digestive system and respiratory system both contribute to work together. The systems cannot work by themselves as they both provide the materials needed throughout the body. They supply energy to all the cells throughout the body. The respiratory system and digestive system allow each other to function.

The digestive system is made up of all different organs which starts at the mouth and finishes at the anus but on the way involves all other organs; these organs help to break down and absorb the food. Our bodies need food as this is what helps us to do everyday tasks. The food we eat once in our body


is used for growth repair, cell function, heart function, warmth and breathing. If we don’t eat enough food then people will find that they are lethargic and find everyday tasks very difficult for example; running, as the body has no energy from food they will get tired quickly and their stamina will decrease and they will feel breathless. It’s not only the energy that the body needs from the food it’s also some chemicals as these certain chemicals help to maintain the bodies organs and keep them healthy .

Food and drink that we consume must be made into smaller molecules of nutrients by the body so it can be used for energy. The nutrient from the food goes into the veins and then it diffuses into the cells and is then transported around the body through the blood stream. The

cell walls are 1 cell thick as then it allows the process of diffusion to occur.

The digestive system takes in food from your environment and then breaks it down to smaller molecules. Through the process of digestion, your body breaks large nutrient molecules into even smaller molecules; these smaller molecules enter the intestine and are then absorbed into the bloodstream. The cells then take these molecules and use them so the body can build new molecules that then go on to provide the cells energy needs and also for storage within the cells.

The digestive system is dependent on the respiratory system as it needs the respiratory system for it to work correctly. The digestive tract which includes the mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach etc. uses muscles to make it contract so that the food can be broken up and also to move the food along the tract. Some of the muscles in the stomach turn the food into a liquid and then muscle contractions from the small intestine move it through the rest of the system. In order for these muscles to work in the way they do they need oxygen, therefore without the respiratory system the muscles would not be able to work. Also the respiratory system removes all carbon dioxide and water that the cells produce as a waste product.

The respiratory system’s main function is to supply the blood with the oxygen it needs to transport around the body to all of the different organs. The way in which the system does this is by breathing; this is an involuntary action of the body. This system/ process are

done by using the mouth, nose, trachea, lungs, diaphragm and the bronchi. It starts by our bodies inhaling oxygen, the oxygen then goes onto the larynx and then through the trachea into the chest cavity. The trachea then branches off into two smaller tubes which are called the bronchi. These tubes then split into even smaller tubes names bronchial. These tubes then go directly into the lungs which then go onto small sacks called alveoli. During the process of breathing there is a gaseous interchange which is the interchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide; when we inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.

After all of that the oxygen enters our bloodstream by diffusing through the membranes of the lungs and then into the blood vessels. This is then passed onto another system which is The Circulatory System; this system then transports the oxygen to all of the cells in the body and picks up any waste products on the way.

The digestive and circulatory system work together by first of all in the small intestine absorbing all the nutrients from the food we consume and then putting them to use throughout the body, but this is only after all of the nutrients are broken down by the liver. This is the first place where the nutrients are absorbed from the intestine. Also then without the heart beating because of the circulatory system there wouldn’t be any peristalsis which then won’t push the food down into the digestive system, wouldn’t churn our food, makes the absorption of food increasingly difficult and would make ejection of any waste we produce in the large intestine very

difficult and even near impossible.

The circulatory system brings in the oxygen that then the lungs take in and transport it around the body and then brings the carbon dioxide back for the lungs to push out(exhale) The lungs bring oxygen into the blood stream which goes to feed the heart and the rest of your body. The respiratory system brings in oxygen, which then the circulatory system will carry around the body and then go on to deliver this to the muscle tissue throughout the body. When all of the oxygen has been used up and carbon dioxide is produced (gaseous exchange) the circulatory system will bring the carbon dioxide back to the lungs where the respiratory system will dispose of it.

All of these systems work together to keep the body functioning; they all have different parts and roles throughout the body and this helps the body to breathe, to get rid of any waste products, to pump oxygen around the body, to digest food so we can use the nutrients as energy for breathing, muscle contractions etc.
