During my time in high school, I held a deep aversion to physical education classes. My intermittent participation in dodgeball games seemed to have little impact on the overall team dynamics. Likely, my peers perceived me as uninterested because I was often chosen last during team selections, which further dampened my enthusiasm. Even though I voiced my concerns, the coach's indifference only heightened my sense of exclusion. Nevertheless, despite my lackluster performance in sports activities, I maintained a respectful and thoughtful attitude towards others. There was an instance in my freshman year when our PE class was divided into six balanced gender groups for a badminton competition.

Despite the fact that ability was not considered during team formation, the six basketball nets positioned were in proximity to the wooden stands. These stands, engineer

ed to blend into the wall, possessed a foldable feature. When folded up, they functioned like a ten-foot tall ladder against the wall. Even though these bleachers didn't directly influence team composition, surprisingly, they played an integral role in imparting a learning experience to the boys that day. I found myself on a team with five freshmen who unfortunately displayed high levels of immaturity. Their main focus seemed to be making an impression rather than understanding and appreciating education's importance.

They consistently derived immense satisfaction from showcasing their prowess, never missing a chance to boast about their competencies. Their favourability was apparent among the novices, thus leading to their preference by the coach for team selection. Despite all else, they were part of my team and I comprehended the significance of accepting this reality. It was time to ge

things moving. My fellow players headed towards the net while jesting about Tom in transit. Given his slightly overweight physique, sports posed quite a challenge for Tom. His struggles were conspicuous in his efforts; he either overhit the shuttlecock or ended up striking against the net itself. Watching him being mocked by others sparked such annoyance within me that I reluctantly moved myself towards where they were determining who would kick off the game.

Whilst my demeanor may have masked my inward timidity, the events of the day soon brought it to light. The idea of Tom, a fellow freshman, struggling to retrieve a ball from the bleachers became a source of amusement for the onlooking youngsters. I quickly deduced that the day would be a challenging one. The instruction to commence the game had been given and I idly observed as everyone played rather poorly. Some were even unable to strike the birdie once. Tom, in particular, seemed incapable of preventing the birdie from slipping through his racquet's netting. In a futile attempt to compensate for our collective badminton ineptitude, the boy in my team proceeded to engage in foolish antics. An array of loud criticisms were directed at others in the gym who were similarly unskilled at the sport.

A lad mockingly commended Tom for elevating the ball excessively. Ironically, these boys looked condescendingly on others even though they themselves weren't deserving of any accolades. I felt empathy for Tom and was annoyed by the boy’s attitude. Tom consistently bore their jests. Sure, he wasn't an athlete, but that didn't authorize anyone to ridicule him. Perhaps, the taunts didn't bother him

much. I recognized his intelligence from his outstanding classroom performance. Yet, to the so-called popular lads, that didn't suffice. This perhaps sparked my motive to assist him.

Tom had the responsibility to step in when the boys acted out. Nonetheless, as he didn't uphold his duty, I decided that it was up to me to reprimand them. The prospect of helping Tom with this issue was intimidating; however, before fear could totally paralyze me, an opportunity arose. A bird sitting atop the bleachers signaled it was time for me to take bold steps. Without wasting any time, I swiftly followed the bird upwards. My previous encounters with ladders similar to this one made the task less challenging despite the incredibly tiny and alarmingly slick rungs. Even though I hadn't completely understood how this action would benefit us, I believed that my courageous act would undermine the boys' audacious self-assurance.

I hadn't thought about the potential consequences. The simple act of retrieving a shuttlecock from the top of the bleachers had won these young boys esteemed admiration. Despite my lack of popular appeal or athletic prowess, this event motivated me and planted in me a hope that it could also earn me some backing. I tossed down the shuttlecock, their faces reflecting shock as they registered what happened - an act which provided me with satisfaction. I shot Tom a mischievous grin while he was fully focused on me. While it was only a small gesture, it represented that even I could be proactive and useful too. As I started to make my way down from the bleachers, fear began to creep in but

there was no alternative except to descend carefully one step at a time while my excitement propelled me to rush back down to ground level.

Having lost my solid grip on the ladder, I started sliding down the freshly waxed, slick steps of the bleachers. I managed to miraculously land safely on my feet at the base, only to lose my balance and fall backwards onto my posterior moments later. The unexpected trip elicited laughter from my classmates, leaving me thoroughly humiliated. Despite thankfully not sustaining any physical injuries, I was on the brink of tears—ones that threatened to flow freely over my flaming red cheeks. Fortunately, my embarrassment was hidden as I was still fronting the bleachers. Despite this, I had to deal with cruel jibes from those in the crowd such as, "Hey, Cynthia! We should let you take another shot at climbing those bleachers!"

A child hollered "You're faster than a monkey!", sparking uproarious laughter from the entire group. I battled back tears, taking several calming breaths and reminding myself that this wasn't my downfall. This event became a crucial life lesson for me. As I remained on the ground after tumbling, Tom took my place. He showed compassion towards me and shielded me from further mockery by the other boys, prompting an appreciative smile despite the unforeseen circumstances. Although revenge is not a viable solution, this incident educated me about pondering before reacting. On a positive note, it seemed as if this episode enhanced my self-assurance.
