The “Era of Good Feelings” was a time period that lasted from about 1815-1824, which marked the period in which nationalism arose in the United States. People began to be patriotic about their country; the national anthem was written and American music and art began to develop. During this time, the Democratic Republican party dominated the government since the Federalist party had disappeared under President Monroe,who was elected in 1816. However, with the rise of nationalism eventually came the birth of sectionalism.
Despite the term “Era of Good Feelings” coined to the short-lived period after the War of 1812, the years between 1815 and 1825 can more accurately be characterized by economic clashes and hardship, political divisions concerning federal versus state issues as well as foreign affairs, and social issues in regards to slavery which demonstrated
... a period inundated by heated debates and disunity. Nevertheless, nationalism was still an evident part during this era which is why many historians choose to refer to this period as the “Era of Good Feelings.”
Sectionalism was furthered by the economic and political issues during this time of supposed “good feelings.” Document A is written by John Randolph, a plantation owner from Virginia.
He believes that the Congress was given the power to “regulate commerce and equalize duties on the whole of the United States” and “[no] one interest in the country [should be] sacrificed by the management of taxation to another.” The Tariff of 1816, also known as the Tariff of Abominations in the South, goes against these beliefs by promoting sectionalism through the American system. The tariff benefitted the manufacturers of the North by eliminating foreign
