As an assignment from the tee shirt manufacturing company, I am tasked to produce a database with Entity Relationship Modelling. Per the following summary, the company produces t-shirts with over 100 designs available in 4 sizes. Due to its rapid growth, Cathy Harris is finding it difficult to manage all the paperwork manually.
Due to the growth of the business, Cathy believes this current method may no longer suffice and continuing with it could cause unnecessary trouble. In my report, I have proposed an ERM starting at a simple stage, which I believe will assist Cathy in running her business effectively.
During this phase, we completed the resolution of all one-to-many relationships, an essential step towards creating an efficient relational database that enables swift retrieval of relevant information. Additionally, we merged the payment entity with the or
...der details entity. Moving forward, we will input relevant attributes pertaining to the Tee Shirt Manufacturing Company and review the entities to ensure that they are normalized to third normal form, thus eliminating any non-primary key dependencies.
During the final phase of ERM, all remaining attributes for the five entities were added. The primary keys for each entity are highlighted in bold and underlined. Foreign keys are indicated with an asterisk (*). The order details entity and design details entity both have composite primary keys, marked with an asterisk (*) and underline in their respective entities. It is not possible to have two identical attributes in an ERM unless one is a primary key and the other is a foreign key.
The process of creating an Access table and fields for the ERM is quite simple. After completing the tables, the relationships ca
be established. It's not necessary to follow every step precisely, but it's recommended for inexperienced individuals. However, creating a complex ERM may be more challenging. Cathy can benefit from using the database included in her ERM to manage paperwork and access customer information with less difficulty than before.
The new computerised system enables Cathy to efficiently retrieve customer information from the database, such as payment history, tenure, and order frequency. This results in faster checking procedures which benefit her business. Furthermore, the system facilitates effortless storage and updating of data, eliminating the inconvenience of using bulky filing cabinets and manual record-keeping techniques. In the future, there is potential for additional enhancements to the database system that would enable more comprehensive information retrieval with a single click.
