The Dubai Government, in collaboration with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), founded the airline by utilizing a leased 737 and A300 from PIA.
Emirates Airlines launched its inaugural flights from Dubai on 25th October 1985. In the following years, routes to London, Frankfurt, and Istanbul were added in 1987. By 1992, Emirates Airlines expanded its services to include Djakarta, Paris, Rome, and Zurich. Presently, operating a fleet of 113 aircraft, Emirates serves more than 100 destinations across 62 countries globally. Remarkably resilient amidst the economic and aviation downturn of recent years which heavily impacted other airlines, Emirates attributes its success to their exceptional marketing efforts that have promoted Dubai as an enticing tourist destination with tax-free shopping.
Emirates is known as the world's fastest-growing airline and one of the top 10 car
...riers globally in terms of revenue. It has also become the largest airline in the Middle East, leading in revenue, fleet size, and passengers carried. In the fiscal year of 2007/08, Emirates transported a total of 21 million passengers. Overall, it holds a dominant position within the aviation industry.
Emirates Airline and its freight subsidiary, Emirates SkyCargo, transported 3 million tons of cargo. By 2011, Emirates will have 122 Boeing 777s, making it the largest aircraft type in its fleet. Additionally, it will have 58 Airbus A380s by 2012 and aims to include over 120 Airbus A350s by 2018. Emirates became the second operator of the Airbus A380 when it received its first aircraft on July 28, 2008. This aircraft is now operational on the Dubai to New York route and has started nonstop flights between Los Angeles and Dubai. The airline is committed to operating an eco-efficien
fleet and expects its second A380's arrival to further reduce its average fuel consumption per passenger. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, the chairman, stated, "By 2013, with the arrival of at least 100 new aircraft and the retirement of older ones, Emirates' overall fleet efficiency will improve."
