Digital Assistant: Text by Thinking Smartphones Essay Example
Currently, we have super smartphones with emails, 4G plus network, super-fast operating system, contacts, location, and calendar managed from one place (Schutten, 12). In future, Google in collaboration with Apple has promised to offer an excellent smartphone with a self-texting ability and the aptitude to know what the user needs to do and how to do it by default.
For example, when a user needs to send a Birthday Message to his wife at 10.00 AM, the phone will just read the users mind, text the message and send to his wife (Su, 37). The new generation of smartphones is thought to bring a new world of experience in technological advancement. The announcement made by Google in 2012 aimed to release the device by late 2018 (Schutten, 14). The smartphone aims to beat all the other applications such as Facebook Messenger, Apple Siri, Microsoft Cortana a
...nd Google and Yahoo Calendars. The phone will incorporate all this into a single easy to work technology (Santen, Djan Khoe & Bram Vermeer, 19). This paper will research on the “Help” and “Risk” of this innovation to the society.
Google and Apple
These are the two companies that aim to produce the Digital Assistant smartphone that comes with features such as text by thinking applications. Google is one of the greatest American multinational technological company that offers Internet-based products and services. Some of its products include cloud computing, software manufacture, online advertising technologies and search engines. The ability to be the holder of a large market on the internet makes Google a better company to produce the ever awaited secure digital assistant smartphones (Santen, Djan Khoe & Bram Vermeer, 23). Also
Google manufactures a phone design called the “Nexus” phone which is then outsourced to trusted manufacturers such as Samsung and LG.
Their way of doing things is similar to how Apple works with Foxconn to design and produce their iPhone. They have produced Nexus tablets ranging from Nexus 5 to Nexus 7 while Apple has IPhone mini to IPhone 6S series to iPhone SE as their new product (Schutten, 12). On the other hand, Apple is also an American Multinational Technological industry that develops, designs, and sells online services-Adverts, Consumer electronics, mobile and computer electronics and other consumer electronics such as TV, IPad, watches, phones and equipment. Their strategy of doing business is similar to that of Google as it has an online Itunes Store similar to Google Drive, Mac Apple Store, and the iOS Application Store. As seen early, the company outsources its products through companies such as Foxconn to design their products (Arthur, 21). Based on the fact that both corporations work on similar products and services, they have announced to partner in producing one super smartphone that brings all technological needs under one button click.
The technology will help users to deal with all their life needs without much interruption of their daily life activities (Santen, Djan Khoe & Bram Vermeer, 28). As E-commerce companies, Google and Apple aim to transform the society into a technically and technologically advanced space by connecting people through their forward-thinking innovations. In the previous past, the corporations have offered the best and valued products in the market making the consumers preference move towards their valuable goods and services. Their competitive advantage in the world is unshakeable therefore placing
them in a position easy to exploit their consumers with the new product (Santen, Djan Khoe & Bram Vermeer, 39).
Their products can accommodate all types of applications ranging from easy to use e-health application to complicated e-banking software. Having this in mind, the two companies feels that there is a need to produce a mega-smartphone that combines all the needs of the society such as organizing events, taking notes and texting while driving to reduce the ever increasing road accidents (Arthur, 25).
The Digital Assistant Product
The Digital Assistant smartphone will use a 5G internet model either in cellular or Wi-Fi connection. Also, it has the power to text and complete commands based on users thought power.
It, therefore, means that the application will be working based on individual’s ability to think and implement the issues through the gadget. This technology will be achieved by having a sensor mounted headset and an eye tracking technology that makes it easy for the device to read the users mind. The sensor will have a brain machine that detects and converts the brainwaves into digital signals which are then displayed on the phone's screen as a text message. This technology will replace the hands-free texting devices making it easy for drivers and other “differently abled” people to text and inform their loved one on what they are thinking of at given point in time.
The importance of this innovation. This innovation will have an all-round benefit to the society as it will increase the efficiency and effectiveness through which people do their work. For example, in health, they will make it simple for patients to record what they are feeling
by just expressing and reading the activities running in their minds. Hence, this innovation will make it simple for doctors to diagnose patients based on the actual information placed on their health electronic devices (Wagner, 17).
Variously, the digital assistant will have the capability to calculate the information based on the users location and mindset, therefore, influencing the user to take a better-calculated move. For example, the smartphone will have to listen to a conversation, book appointment reminders and schedules for users. That is, the smartphone will listen and help the user in making an informed decision before getting down into implementing the issue (Santen, Djan Khoe ; Bram Vermeer, 29). The application will be more efficient than the current Siri-Apple Digital Assistant, Microsoft Cortana or the Facebook M.
variously; the smartphone will have a significant influence on what consumers buy and spend time on. That is, it will be modeled in a way that it controls the interests, the habits, and preferences of its users. Basically, users will be locked into one ecosystem where all their needs are provided under one roof (Wagner, 21). In essence, it will work as the real-life personal assistant we have in our offices, working more than a robot, and responding to the user’s needs by reading his or her mind.
The current applications in the marketplace are gender biased, most of them are using women voices while in essence male voice could be needed depending on the matter at hand. Though, the developers of this new smartphone claim that all requirements will be balanced and every user will be offered with what he or she needs (Su, 44). In the today’s
Marketplace, Facebook is the only company with a no-nonsense digital assistant, but its services and activities are limited to making hotel reservations and ordering flowers, but the Digital assistant will make all things working based on the user’s needs. It will be an upgrade of the current Google search engine assistant that provides suggestions based on the users choice of words. Therefore, the device will tend to reduce errors and at the same time save time spent in managing and completing some simple tasks (Wagner, 23). According to Edgar Snyder and Associates Company, there are more than 700,000 drivers who attempt to use smartphones while still on the wheel.
Some try to connect with their family members while other connect on different social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. This has resulted in about one point seven million crashes annually with more than 330,500 injuries. Following this, there is a feeling that the digital assistant smartphones will completely reduce the number of accidents by half. Drivers will comfortably use their smartphones while behind the wheels without causing accidents.
Therefore, the collaboration between the two companies is thought to save life as well as promote health and business environments in America and the world as a whole (Santen, Djan Khoe ; Bram Vermeer, 38). Security wise, the technology will help the users to maintain their passwords and users name in the in the safest war possible. No one will ever hack into the user’s documents because all passwords are recorded in the user’s brain and are only retrieved after a user things about them. Therefore, with this digital assistant, the online security is expected to improve.
Disadvantage of
this Innovation
At first, the smartphone will be expensive to acquire meaning that the poor will be locked out. That is, only the rich will enjoy the fruits of the technology first. The increase in the gap between the poor and the rich will widen, hospitals will adopt the technology leaving the weak and the vulnerable at the mercy of the developers to make a much cheaper technology accessible and affordable to all the people. According to research by Schutten (2014), loss of confidential personal information is expected as criminals will use the opportunity to exploit rich people to showcase their passwords and bank account balance. For example, during a house raid, thieves will just need to ask for the password, place the device new the victim’s eyes and the system is quick and free to open (Schutten, 18). Furthermore, having some crucial personal information online may breach the security needs of the smartphone users.
For example, in the case of health records, the smartphone will text everything in the patient mind, either health related or confidential family matters (Arthur, 67). A criminal in the hospital line may also request vital information which the system will just retrieve from the individual brain without personal consent. Therefore, even though the system has some benefits to the society, some vital considerations must be put in place before launching it officially (Santen, Djan Khoe ; Bram Vermeer, 35).
Conclusion
Growth in technology is wholly supplementing human ability and at the same bringing in new experiences that are thought to solve some of the common challenges, we undergo in our environment, e.g., Road Accidents. The collaboration between Google and Apple
to integrate the Siri Voice and the Google digital assistant will move the world into a new phase of possibilities.
It will help individuals in reducing online security breaches and scams, lower road accidents and the same time help people in organizing events and schedules in a more professional manner. In essence, the device is aimed to offer each a free personal assistant to every individual in the world through technology (Schutten, 34).
