Originating in Scotland during the later medieval period, curling involves two teams with four members each, and is a winter sport that bears similarity to bowls. On an ice sheet, two tees are placed 38 yards apart and have circles with a 6 feet radius around them.
The objective of the sport is to position additional stones as close as possible to the tee. Per team, around 8 to 10 stones are allotted. Points are calculated based on the stones closest to the tees by the end of the game. The Bonspiel is the name given to a curling championship.
The construction of official curling equipment and playing fields is guided by 'The World Curling Federation', the official governing body for this popular winter sport in Canada, Europe, and to some extent in the US. The cu
...rling sheet is a crucial element that will be further examined. The organization is headquartered in Scotland.
The sheet must be extremely flat and even, with a length of 146 to 150 feet and a width of 14.5 to 16.5 feet. There are targets called "houses" marked at each end of the sheet, which consist of three concentric rings made of different colored paint or vinyl.
The rings are classified based on their diameter, which could be four foot, eight foot or twelve foot. They assist in gauging the closeness of the stone to the tee. A stone must touch the outermost ring to gain a score, otherwise it would not score at all. These rings do not have a significant impact on scoring as they are merely used as a visual aid for players. The houses are divided into quarters
by drawing two lines lengthwise and widthwise.
The centre line runs the length of the sheet and intersects with two tee lines drawn 16 feet from and parallel to each backboard. This intersection creates the button which serves as the centre of the house. In addition, there are two hog lines also drawn 16 feet from and parallel to each backboard. Located around 12 feet behind each button is a hack used for pushing against while making a throw. Indoor rinks typically use rubber lined hoes on either side of the centre line and two fixed hacks.
The field requirements for curling include a maximal distance of three inches between the inside edge and center line/front edge of the hack line. Limited to one movable hack, this is important to note. Another crucial factor to consider is the quality of ice. Curling clubs often hire a team of ice makers specifically trained in regulating temperature and air humidity levels.
Typically, multiple sensors and humidity probes are embedded in each ice sheet to monitor surface temperature. Ideally, the ice surface temperature should be around 23 °F. The formation of pebbles is crucial in preparing the field for curling. Pebbles are created by spraying water on the field and allowing the resulting droplets to freeze. Pebbles aid in stone curling by allowing the stone to curl inward or outward upon contact.
