The desire to use a substance, known as drug abuse, can be better understood through two theories: the gateway theory and the disease model. The gateway theory suggests that prolonged marijuana use often leads to the consumption of illicit substances.
According to a study by the National Epidemiological Research Institute, a significant number of marijuana users also start using alcohol within three years. The study also suggests that individuals who were already drinking alcohol before using marijuana may experience worsening effects on their health. Additionally, the disease model theory proposes that considering alcoholism and other substance abuse issues as diseases could hinder effective treatment methods. Therefore, it is recommended for individuals with this condition to seek appropriate treatment options in healthcare settings (Terence, T 2001). As a criminal justice practitioner, I support the gateway theory of drug abuse which highlights the unrecognized benefits of marijuana.

...rt. One of its distinguishing factors is its medicinal properties which can provide relief from pain, vomiting, nausea, and other symptoms associated with diseases like cancer and AIDS. Additionally, the plant has diverse applications including the production of lotions, ropes, food, and clothing. However, there are drawbacks to this theory as well. These include an increased risk of throat, mouth, and lung cancer, potential complications during pregnancy leading to stillbirths, and tooth discoloration causing bad breath (Paul Hokemeyer 2014).
