Despite our nearly 3000 years of existence as humans, we still unconsciously base our opinions of others on our personal beliefs.
We possess an innate intuition, a sixth sense, that allows us to sense either positivity or negativity towards a person or circumstance before our conscious mind can register it. This immediate acknowledgment and classification can be advantageous, as it enables our unconscious, instinctual thinking to detect unfavorable situations and avoid them even before our conscious mind has processed it. With this remarkable ability of instant recognition and unconscious decision-making, can we humans possibly achieve more if we strive to cultivate these subconscious decisions? We must trust this subconscious power of action without cognitive processing more than the judgments we make with our senses.
In certain scenarios, the unconscious mind can ta
ke over and provide a gut feeling that can be either positive or negative. An exemplification of this is portrayed in "Blink" where the Kouro statue was inspected by art experts for years to determine its authenticity. However, it took mere seconds for the professionals to realize that the statue was a fake based on a gut feeling.
Despite being of high quality, the Kouro was recognized as fake by art critics who couldn't explain their intuition that something was off. Even Angelos Delivorrias, director of the Benaki Museum in Athens, felt a "wave of 'intuitive repulsion'" upon first seeing it (Gladwell, 7). This gut instinct is common and occurs when individuals have a sense that something is wrong.
