When did “Man’s Best Friend” become caged for mans benefit? Humans using animals as a form of entertainment has become a social norm and it needs to be stopped. Animal cruelty comes in many forms and this is one of them. The main exploitation of animals comes to the companies of SeaWorld, Zoos, and circuses they have been seen as a family outing, but there are alternatives to this activity.

SeaWorld has been open since 1959. They are well known for their orca and dolphin shows. However, they offer many other shows to see. Sea world has animals from the sea. Therefore, animals that were born and have the instinct that stretch as big as living in the ocean should not be put in this small captivity. The pools these animals are in are not big enough to have a

thriving life. The water is not ocean water, the chlorine hurts their skin and causes lesions. The health of these animals is constantly at risk. Orcas have been documented for having rotting teeth, dying and infected skin as well as scars from other orcas in the pool. Many orcs dorsal fin has also flopped due to lack of key nutrients. The dolphins have been attacking each other, just as much as orcas. This is due to the animals being separated from their pod and placed with random animals from other pods. This is very dangerous to the animals from the start. However animals are not the only danger her. Many trainers have died. Orcas have been dragged trainers under water, drowning them, breaking bones even passing one to each other. This proves wild animals do not

do well in captivity. Corky is an orca who is still alive after being taken to SeaWorld in 1969. That’s 49 years in captivity! 165 orcas have died at SeaWorld, 195 have died if we include the miscarriage and stillborn calves. A wild animal has wild tendencies. Humans cannot train a wild animal to be domestic.

175 Million people visit a zoo each year. That means animals in captivity have been exploited to a big part of the population. Zoos have a range of wild animals, to lion and tigers to snakes and rabbits. These animals are in cages and exhibits for many people to view. This can cause stress and anxiety. Animals show signs of this by hitting the bars or the glass, not eating having very high aggression towards themselves and zookeepers. This is not a life for these animals. For the animals in petting zoos they can be harmed due to the people and children not properly knowing what to do or how to handle these animals. Animals suffer starvation and can get depressed. Some have never known life outside of a cage. Most of these animals have never even had a chance to reproduce because they have been separated from their natural groups. Even the endangered species will be less likely to reproduce due to not knowing the other animal very well which causes breeding issues. Not to mention zookeepers put animals down for doing what they naturally think is right. In 2016 a gorilla named Harambe was put down after a mother neglected to look after her child and her child fell in the exhibit. Harambe rushed over to see the

small child and dragged him under water. He is a gorilla who was investigating a new species that came into his territory. The zookeepers decided to put Harambe down, he was killed because a mother wasn’t watching her 3-year-old. These animals do not have the space they need to have a healthy life, a healthy social life nor a healthy mental state.

The last big exploitation of animals is the circus industry. Recent circuses have been banned to use elephants in their shows due to the inhumane abuse. The way they train their lions tigers bears and elephants is with giant rods with spears on them, electric poles not feeding them or with whips. That is abuse. Many circuses travel and by travelling these animals never have a sturdy home. Many animals have died in a circus and many animals have tried to escape and have had to be put down. Tyke the elephant was a circus animal. She escaped and ran through the city of KaKaako, she was harming other and herself, she was scared. Police officers shot her multiple times to put her down. She was in an unknown place to her, she was scared, and she was killed by many shots alone. No one not even animals should die scared and alone. These animals are taken as babies and tortured while being trained their whole life. When acts go wrong its their fault and they get consequences whether it be isolation no food of whippings.

Due to so many animals being taken from their natural habitat or being born in captivity it does stunt them from a thriving life. Many of these precious animals

cannot be put back into mature. They have been harmed, so living naturally will be difficult. They wont know how to hunt properly or be in a pack. Most will die due to not having lived properly and this is the problem. To take these animals out of their home, use them, let them die off, or release them back to just die anyway is inhumane. Animals were placed on earth in their natural habitats for a reason. That is were they live best and that is where they can have a long and successful life.

People do want to see animals and they do want to be educated. This is where Tv and books com into play. National geographic has many resources to learn about these animals from their magazines to books and photography. Many families watch tv, therefore they can watch animal planet or planet earth without harming animals. For more hands on there are sanctuaries that have animals that absolutely cannot return to the wild. You can get on a bus that’s caged in and drive around their world and see how they truly interact. For once the human is in the cage and not the animal.

Animal use in entertainment is cruel, SeaWorld, zoos and circuses are the most popular use of these animals. This is becoming normal and this needs to change. Animals are friends and have their own families and lives. They have feelings and feel pain. A living breathing organism. There are alternatives to supporting this exploitation of these animals.
