Addressing the Challenges to Accessing Vaccines Essay Example
The Republic of Uganda is appealing to the United Nations (UN) for aid in resolving our vaccine shortage. Over time, Uganda has encountered considerable obstacles in achieving high vaccination rates, as only 52% of children have received all required immunizations against preventable illnesses. The allocation of funds for vaccination initiatives has consistently dwindled, necessitating a growing dependence on assistance from external benefactors.
Moreover, we allocate our funding to both immunization and the fight against malaria. Additionally, the shortage of healthcare professionals in rural areas compounds the challenge for individuals seeking vaccines. We have observed that leveraging the media has proven effective in promoting the importance of vaccines for children. However, not all citizens in our country have access to television or social media. Furthermore, prevalent misconceptions among our population have led to misunderstandings about

In light of these incidents, the Republic of Uganda is requesting increased funding from the United Nations to enhance our immunization programs, provide training for additional health management personnel, and effectively educate our population about the importance of vaccines. The Republic of Uganda has made numerous efforts to improve vaccination standards in recent decades. In 1983, we established the Uganda National Expanded Programme on Immunization (UNEPI) with the aim of increasing the number of children who receive complete vaccination. By 2000, only 29% of children were fully vaccinated, but this
percentage has now reached 52%.
In 2013, Uganda implemented the introduction of new vaccines like the pneumococcal vaccine and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Additionally, President Yoweri Museveni approved the Immunization Act 2016 that mandates parents to ensure their children aged one day to five years are immunized against all immunizable diseases, including tetanus and HPV. Non-compliance with this Act may result in fines, imprisonment for a maximum of six months, or both. These efforts demonstrate Uganda's dedication to improving access to vaccines for our population.
Uganda advocates for equal accessibility of vaccines, regardless of individuals' background, income, social class, and other factors. The country acknowledges that challenges in accessing vaccines include limited clinics in rural areas and insufficient information for parents. By allocating more funding to vaccination programs in member states, it would be possible to establish additional rural clinics, improving healthcare convenience for local residents. Moreover, while having medical personnel is crucial for the clinics' smooth operation, the existence of social stigma surrounding vaccinations could hinder their efficacy.
It is crucial for healthcare workers to receive proper training so that they can effectively communicate and clarify any misunderstandings about vaccinations. It is imperative that universal education is provided by all nations to address the barriers to accessing vaccines as knowledge leads to acceptance. Therefore, we call upon all member states to unite and support our cause.
