Introduction
In his seventh edition of the book Fitness and Your Health, David C. Nieman vastly covers a wide-range discussion on health-related topics. These discussions form the base of the various lectures covered in class. Some of the topics include heart health, mental health, and obesity.
Heart health
Nieman explains that the heart is made up of the arteries, veins, and capillaries that aid it in carrying out the blood circulation process throughout the body. This lecture focuses on the mainly on heart diseases. There are three main cardiovascular (CVD) diseases that attack the heart and blood vessels. Statistics show that CVD are the primary cause of death worldwide. There are three main forms of CVD namely, Coronary Heart Disease, Stroke, and Peripheral Artery Disease.
The author points out that coronary heart d
...isease attacks the coronary arteries which are the main arteries that nourish the heart muscles to gain energy for the pumping action. An example of coronary heart disease is arteriosclerosis. Arteriosclerosis cause constriction of coronary arteries causing narrowing of these arteries and takes place in four main stages until the clots of blood form up in the ‘narrowed coronary arteries.' Clots form a block that impedes blood flow and results in reduced blood flow to the heart muscles causing a heart attack. Nieman states that there are various leading signs of a heart attack which include, chest discomforts, shortness of breath and nausea.
Nieman also expands on stroke as a CVD. Decreased blood supply causes less oxygen flow to the brain cells. There are three main types of stroke: transient ischemic attacks, hemorrhagic and arteriosclerotic stroke. Main signs of stroke include numbnes
of face, arm or one side of the body, severe headache, blurred vision, and confusion. It causes high mortality rates in America. The common risks that predispose an individual are, obesity, cigar rete smoking, diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure.
The author concludes the lecture on heart disease by explaining the various ways of curbing and preventing the heart diseases. He explains that including fish in the helps in preventing heart diseases. Moreover, having a healthy lifestyle is important in preventing instances of diabetes and obesity. Physical activities also play a distinct, paramount role in preventing heart diseases.
Obesity
David C. Nieman gives a detailed picture on obesity as a fitness and health concern. He statistically states that 36% of adult population are obese. The formula, body mass index (BMI) – Weight in kilograms divided by height in squared meters gives an estimation of obesity. Obesity is associated with, high early mortality rates, high risks of heart diseases, high blood pressure, high risks of getting diabetes type 2, high risks of cancer, risk of osteoarthritis, low self-esteem and poor blood lipid profile.
Distinctly, Nieman states the following as the 3 main causes of obesity: genetic factor; obesity genes are passed on to the off springs from the parents who have such genes. Additionally, taking foods with high calorie level pose the risk of getting obesity. Lastly, being physically dormant exposes one to risk of being obese. Physical exercise help one in losing the detrimental and excess body calories. Different from the myths of many, Nieman explains that exercises do not cause osteoarthritis. It prevents weight gain and maintains good body weight thereby maintaining a healthy body metabolic index.
Weight loss

Finally on this lecture, Nieman explain about eating disorder which is prevalent based on statistics. Eating disorders are associated with, social isolation, dental problems, stomach problems, relentless physical activities and diet pills. These are caused by anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge eating disorder.

Mental health is defined as ‘successful mental ability to cope with changes and adversity. It is associated with mental disorders like anxiety, depression and stress. Depression and anxiety are characterized with worrying a lot hopelessness and pessimism. On the other hand stress cause ‘wear and tear of the body.’ It is divide into eustress and distress.
Stress cause ‘muscles to tense and tighten, fast deep breathing, fast heart rates, increased blood sugar levels, increase sensory reception and halted digestion activities. It can be managed by, reducing stressors, managing stress reactions, seeking social support and observing a healthy lifestyle.
Additionally, stress can be managed positively through, eating balanced diet, time management, sleep, physical activities and setting up a psychologically positive mood towards stress.
Studies show that, exercises reduces cardiovascular reactions to stress that would otherwise turn fatal.
