He didn't know what to do during the Depression, so he starts issuing executive orders, and overstepping his law making power. This sets a bad precedent for the future prime ministers. -In the September 1930 elections, Nazi's get 21% of the vote and communists have 77 seats. This is a drastic change for the Nazis's, who recieved only 2% of the vote in the 1927 elections -In 1932, the unemployment rate skyrocketed, and in the election in April of the same year, Von Hindenburg recieves 53% of the votes while Hitler receives 37% -Von Hindenburg gets angry with Bruning because he tried to help him get power when Hindenburg believed he could do it alone, so Hindenburg makes Von Papen the new Prime minister -During the July Election of 1932, the Nazi's received 43% of the vote, and in the November elections, they lose 30 seats, but they still have plurality -In 1932, after Von Papen has retired, Hindenburg offers Hitler the chancellorship, but he rejects it because he wants full power -on January 30, 1933, Von Hindenburg legally appoints Adolf Hitler chancellor

This transforms his powers of a chancellor to those of a dictator. -This allows Hitler to make laws, so he is basically dictator after being in office for only 5 weeks. -Hitler extends his powers into January of 1934, when the cabinet and Hitler can now make constitutional reforms by decree, and the executive branch can now make laws and extend the constitution, which is essentially a dictatorship
