The book The Hot Zone, authored by Richard Preston and published in New York in 1994, runs for 422 pages. In my opinion, I would rate it a six due to its inconsistent storyline that did contain some captivating scenes which left me glued to the pages and with a nauseating feeling; however, it did not fit the preference of a reader like myself who seeks an edge-of-the-seat book with lots of twists and turns.
During the late 1900s, unfamiliar illnesses emerged that were causing sudden deaths, instilling fear in people everywhere. The source and cure for these diseases were unknown. A man named Charles Monet was believed to have contracted Marburg, a lethal disease resulting in extensive hemorrhaging and clotting. This disease could be transmitted as easily as seeping through an open wound. Marburg is categorized as a filovirus and comprises t
...wo types of viruses: Ebola Zaire and Ebola Sudan.
With a fatality rate of 90% in infected humans, Ebola Zaire is the most deadly among the three types of Ebola. During the shipment of monkeys from the Philippines to Reston, Virginia, some of them started dying mysteriously. As a veterinarian responsible for their care, Dan Dalgard contacted USAMRIID (the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases) for help.
Peter Jahlring, a member of the USAMRIID institute, conducted a blood test on monkeys and discovered they were positive for Ebola Zaire - the deadliest strain of the virus. His discovery caused panic, prompting him to immediately alert his superior. Given the severity of the situation, nobody wanted an outbreak of Ebola Zaire and the C.D.C. was informed.
The army and Dalgard collaborated in an effort to
halt the spread of a frightful disease. The monkey house was relinquished to them, where they put an end to all of the monkeys. They proceeded to thoroughly disinfect the building to prevent Ebola from surviving. However, they eventually learned that it wasn't Ebola Zaire, but instead a fresh variety that they dubbed Ebola Reston. This brought some comfort, but they remained anxious. The author outlines the trajectory of the Ebola virus in producing this book.
The author provides a comprehensive account of individuals' experiences with the deadly disease, and the hardships they endured in combatting it. Their use of vivid depictions and virus descriptions enhances our comprehension.
