Discretion involves using one's judgment to make a decision before acting. It means opting for what is right instead of what is wrong. For instance, in a public setting, if someone behaves strangely, we can exercise discretion by deciding whether to approach them and ask about their well-being or to leave them be. Discretion allows us to make informed decisions as required.
Discretion plays a role in our daily lives, aiding us in distinguishing between right and wrong actions. It is a subjective decision. The police officer demonstrated discretion by opting to apprehend the suspect upon suspecting that the bike was stolen. She displayed discretion through her pursuit of him and her efforts in capturing him. Nevertheless, following three unsuccessful attempts, I believe it would have been prudent for the officer to permit his es
...cape.
In my opinion, the officer's decision to draw her gun in response to a minor offense was unwise, particularly because the suspect was unarmed. This decision was motivated by the suspect walking away and ignoring the officer. Additionally, when the suspect abandoned the bike and started running, it created the perception that he had stolen it. The officer's decision to engage in a struggle with him also impacted her use of judgment. As the suspect resisted, the officer had to exercise even more discretion, ultimately leading her to resort to using her gun and resulting in his death.
I believe that the officer should have targeted the suspect's leg or arm instead of killing him, especially considering it was a minor violation she was pursuing him for. Prior to the shooting, I think the officer exercised good judgment b
chasing him as it would have revealed the initial issue and it was her responsibility to assume the bike was stolen based on the suspect's actions. Despite the struggle, I still consider it a reasonable judgment as the suspect became violent and attacked her while she was performing her duty.
At the moment she brandished the firearm, I believe she could have targeted the suspect's leg in order to prevent his escape without causing his demise. I find killing him to be rather excessive in terms of discretion. Exercising discretion is a challenging skill to master, as it requires individuals in control of the situation to exercise it judiciously. To enhance decision-making regarding discretion among law enforcement officers, it is imperative to provide additional training and courses on the appropriate usage of discretion, which should be accessible to all individuals seeking it, as everyone employs discretion in various circumstances.
