Critical Analysis of Sharon Slaton’s “The Good Girl” Essay Example
The essay "The Good Girl" by Sharon Slayton disscuses how you can become obsessed to pleasing the society around you and forget about your desires. Slayton uses her own personal obsession of being "good" to please her parents believing that thats what she wanted. Slayton believes that her obsession of being good and pleasing others have helped her become a person that knows how to accomplish goals that she sets for herself. Slayton had a meantality of showing her parents she "could do anything and do it well. Although she may believe that her obsession to pleasing society has had a positive out turn on her future. I believe that Slayton obsession has. only lead her to a dooming future because although she knows how to succeed and accomplish her goals she has learned that
...she no longer needs to be obsessed with pleasing society. Slayton provides various examples of how society can highly influence us to become obsessed with being a person we are not. She talks about how her family had perception of her being "good " and she felt like she had to uphold this image of being a "good girl" after being called bad.
The way slayton describes this makes it seem that she didn't want to be this person she just wanted to please her parents. Slaytons obsession with being good had a negative effect in her personal and social life with those around her. Even though slayton had already made her parents proud she blinded he self into believing that she was still no good enough for them. This being said slayton should blame her self for being so obsessiv
and stop blaming her obsession on her parents. I believe that it is very easy to blame your actions on someone else othe than your self. I have personal experience with this my self.
I have always had trouble reading since I was at a young age and i have always said to my self that i am not good at reading because my parents never encourged me to read. But now thatni think about it it is my own fault because they gave me the opportunities in school to read and i always choose not. This relates to Slayton's story because Slayton blames her parents for her obssesion of being good and I always blamed my parents as well for not being able to read. But now if you think closely and you look at the actions you take i believe one should realize where they have gone wrong because you have no one else to blame but your self.
I agree with Slayton when he trys to prove that society has a large impact on us because this happens on a day to day basis in our life's. It is true that sometimes you have to follow some basic standers to portray a certain image that the world around you will like. For example slayton say "people see a very strong and cofident individual... with skills and competency... but all these characteristics were developed through and obsession of being good. " This qoute shows how slayton was seen as a great person to her surroundings but deep in side she wanted to be someone else.
This is showed when she says "I am quite proud of
my reputation but I wish I had cime by it through some other means. " This shows she us proud of what she accomplished but she wish she would have accomplished it for other reasons rather then acomplishing it for others. Societies impact on your actions create a "lack of joy" in eveything you do because yoh are pleasing them but not your own needs. I strongly disagree with Slayton when she trys to say that she has learned alot from this experience and will help her accomplish anything.
The reason I disagree with this is because she has shown signs of giving up on success towards the end if the essay. For example she says " she began to lose motivation to excel. I began to lose intrest in my business lacking drive to devote myself my business success meant little. " This shows how after realizing she wasn't doing thing fir her self she had no drivebto keep going. This shows how Slayton's lack of joy to her own life could lead her to failing in life. I believe that after she realized that she didn't want to be succesful her mind shut down. Although she say " I have tested my limits and know I could do it all....
I have been given the strength confront the future. " I believe that unless she really wants it she can accomplish it but if she wants to do it for other she will lack the ability to do iy all like she has before. After reading " The Good Girl" i have learned that society has a great impact on who we are and who
we become as we grow older. I also learned thar we are the ones responsible for our actions and who we choose to be or listen to. For example i took the choice to never excel in reading and now I struggle and slayton took the choice of being influenced by her suroundings and became someone she is not.
Have also learned that once you find out you are not doing something for your self you lack thrive to keep going. I belive that society should stop putting pressure on us to become someone we are not and let us be our own person. Our society is creating images on which we should follow which will create conflict to our personal lifes. We should all be able to pick our paths and choices instead of following others. At the end of the day we are responsible for our actions and choices we decide to embark.
