"We resemble a box of crayons, each unique, yet collectively forming a complete picture". This insightful quote by Shane Derolf represents my sentiments and mirrors my life. In both my personal and academic life, diversity plays a pivotal role and greatly influences my future aspirations. I'm an American girl of Bengali origin. My parents and older sister migrated to America from Bangladesh nineteen years ago. I was born two years afterwards, however, my birth didn't bring the expected joy as culturally, the wish was for a son who could carry forward the family legacy and name. My mother couldn't conceive again after my birth.
As I was maturing, I experienced several challenging periods in my life. A fond memory from when I was just six years old was my mother reassuring me that regardless of any situation, I'll always be her chil
...d. It struck me that society often subjected my parents to unfair treatment simply because they didn't have a male offspring, which placed a burden of guilt on me. There was always a sense of internal revolt against the privileges provided to males in my culture.
Having undergone numerous emotional experiences, I've matured into a strong and forward-thinking woman with the bravery to voice my opinions. I am resolute in changing the societal constraints imposed on women in my community. My mission is to demonstrate that women hold as much potential as men.
My parents are concerned about my choices as I have turned away from early marriages, the perceived conventional lifestyle for women in my homeland, and the stereotypical expectations of a virtuous Bengali girl. They always had the fear that my thoughts and expressions could
go against me purely because of my gender. However, I know myself and believe that a meaningful college experience can play a significant role in making me independent, reducing the need to adhere strictly to their ideology of a Bengali girl. Despite having deep respect and love for my family and cultural heritage, I am striving to achieve a balance between their expectations and my individual desires.
The reason for my presence here after two years is because I firmly acknowledge that every individual possesses unique learning styles. I've grasped this truth through my learning journeys, sharing classrooms with students exhibiting both strong capabilities and significant challenges. My observation led me to understand that efficient educators not only identify our collective needs but also recognize each student's specific requirements. This sparked my interest in teaching, leading me to choose CWE.
