The Open Door Policy is a policy that was set in 1899 in foreign affairs allowing multiple Imperial powers access to China, with none of them in control of the country. It stated that the United States, and all European nations could trade with China. The Open Door Policy is generally associated with China but it was also recognized at the Berlin Conference of 1885.

Big Stick Policy is often contributed to President Theodore Roosevelt's doctrine, known as the Monroe doctrine. In that he made reference to 'Speak softly and carry a big stick.' Basically it meant that we could try to have peaceful negotiations however we needed to be prepared to back this up, hence the big stick policy.

A ship canal 40 miles long across the Isthmus of Panama built by the United States (1904-1914). It created a short passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. Teddy Roosevelt thought it was a vital strategic interest to the U.S.

The Roosevelt Corollary is a corollary to the Monroe Doctrine that was articulated by President Theodore Roosevelt in his State of the Union Address in 1904 after the Venezuela Crisis of 1902-03. The corollary states that the United States will intervene in conflicts between European countries and Latin American countries to enforce legitimate claims of the European powers, rather than having the Europeans press their claims directly. The Roosevelt was to be seen as an addition to the Monroe doctrine; but could also be seen as a departure. It stated that the U.S. had right to exercise military force in Latin American countries in order to keep European countries out.

Panamanian's eager to rebel when Columbia refused America's proposal to buy land for the canal; the people hoped that prosperity would follow the construction of the canal; Bunau-Varilla and US naval forces aided in revolution; US justified intervention by a strained interpertation of treaty of 1846 (but Roosevelt was really just desperate to be elected president by his own means); occured on November 3, 1903 with the killing of Chinese civilian and a donkey.

Agreement when Japan agreed to curb the number of workers coming to the US and in exchange Roosevelt agreed to allow the wives of the Japenese men already living in the US to join them.

In foreign affairs, Roosevelt pursued a strong policy, permitting the instigation of a revolt in Panama to dispose of Colombian objections to the Panama Canal and helping to maintain the balance of power in the East by bringing the Russo-Japanese War to an end.
