Canada acknowledges same-sex marriage as the bond between two people of the same gender, a form of marriage that is not widely accepted in many countries. Presently, only five nations permit same-sex marriage: Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada and South Africa. Although some countries may allow different types of homosexual partnerships, they are not considered genuine marriages. In Canada, civil unions have been available to same-sex couples since 1999; however, it wasn't until July 2005 that Canada became the fourth country to legalize same-sex marriage throughout all its provinces and territories.

Although laws exist, same-sex marriage continues to be a controversial and disputed issue. Some religious factions aim to legally redefine marriage as exclusively between a man and woman. Numerous people, particularly those with firm religious beliefs, do not support same-sex partnerships. Moreover, immigrants and conventional older generations also disapprove of this type
