Abstract
The healthcare sector in the United States has been surrounded by a range of conspiracy theories regarding the current state of healthcare provision. The key focus has been on understanding patients' sentiments towards the type of services they receive at hospitals. Over time, significant transformations have been taking place in this field, with the goal of advancing healthcare services (Fichman 2011). The overall perception of healthcare has shifted from primarily being a concern for service providers to a major concern for consumers.
Consumerism exerts significant pressure on systems in order to achieve desired outcomes from patients.
Methodology
Qualitative Research
This research approach aims to collect genuine opinions from those impacted. It relies on observable and trustworthy sources of information acquired from the research field. In studying consumerism progress, interviews with both healthcare providers and patients proved to
...be the most dependable qualitative research techniques. When seeking unbiased and reliable data, careful consideration should be given to selecting informers. Individuals facing healthcare provision issues are more likely to offer valuable insights compared to those with limited experiences in healthcare.
The information providers were asked to give their ideas about the future progress of consumerism in the coming years.
Quantitative Research
This research method involves analyzing evident documents and phenomena to examine statistics and mathematical data from previous records related to the research topic. In the context of consumerism, this includes examining healthcare unit records and records of service provision. These records are used to predict the future progress of healthcare. The most reliable sources for this information are government websites that oversee healthcare areas and services.
Results
The current trends in consumerism and the say of th
consumers indicate a positive outlook. It is believed that patients should have greater control over their healthcare decisions, given that they are paying for more of it. Nevertheless, healthcare experts anticipate challenges to arise from consumerism in 2016 (Healthcare, P 2004). Patients now desire fast and convenient services such as online payments, retail centers, and an enhanced patient experience. Hence, it is the duty of healthcare systems to ensure the implementation of these aspects.
Healthcare facilities are facing competition from major pharmacy chains and big-box retailers that are creating networks of walk-in clinics to make it easier for patients to access convenient care (Fichman 2011). To stay competitive with this consumerism trend, many hospitals are launching their own clinics, some in partnership with retail chains like Walgreens. The Advisory Board Company's recent Revenue Cycle Survey indicates that point-of-service collections have doubled in the past few years, but providers still need to improve. Christopher Kerns, Managing Director of Research and Insights at The Advisory Board, notes that collecting payment at or before the point of service is crucial because as time passes after care is delivered, a patient's willingness to pay significantly decreases.
