Google is a technological company that aims to advance and develop personal and commercial technologies. An issue the company was having was the conflict between employees, engineers in particular, and managers, so they started to wonder if the company could function without management.
Being a manager nowadays means that you have some years of experience in a certain field, that allows and best qualify you to guide employees within the company. Gaining such experience comes with time, which is why most managers shares old-school corporate values, such as being hierarchical, they had to develop such skill because that is what most of corporations are looking for.
Google wants to provide a comfortable and positive environment for its employees. This strategy is to ensure employee productivity. Since the majority of its employees are millennials, Google aims to be different from a traditional
...corporation.
An issue that the company was having was the conflict between engineers and managers; sometimes managers didn’t understand the engineers’ work and without realizing, managers made the engineer’s job more difficult because they don’t share the same skill set and they don’t communicate well. Engineers are usually more technical, practical, and have their way of building solutions. Meanwhile, the manager wants to do what is best and easier for the company, and both sides weren’t agreeing with each other.
Google decided to do an experiment and remove all the managers from their positons, only to find out a few months later that the company’s productivity went down significantly. The conclusion was that managers were relevant indeed to the company. But they wanted to know why?
In 2008, Google’s People Analytics team released a study based on researches, performance
and surveys of more than 10,000 managers and with the results they developed a project called Oxygen 8, stating the eight characteristics and qualities of being a good manager that will benefit the company and positively affect the employees’ performance:
- good coaching skills;
- be empowering;
- encourage employee success;
- express interest in employee’s well-being;
- be focused and consistent with results;
- be an effective communicator and good listener;
- Strategic guidance for the team;
- have technical skills.
While having all these qualities is the key to be a good manager it is important to say that the company should also focus on
The best course of action for Google it would be promote their employees to manager levels according to their department, since they are already familiar with the environment and already know their co-workers. In this case, promoting an engineer that have the Oxygen 8 attributes to manage other engineers would work better because they share the same background.
