Despite common misconceptions, kickboxing encompasses a range of different techniques and styles that vary significantly from one another. While some may share similarities, others are quite distinct. Although access to training in multiple types of kickboxing can be limited in certain locations, those living in larger cities typically have the chance to learn at least two different varieties.
For those unsure about which direction to take, there are different types of kickboxing available. One widely used form is Muay Thai, originating from Thailand and incorporating fighting techniques from the Indochinese region. It serves as a benchmark for other styles and is dubbed as the "Art of Eight Limbs," where fists, feet, elbows, and knees are utilized in combat. In contrast, American kickboxing prohibits strikes below the waistline and using elbows and knees.
> Kickboxing has a diverse history, originating from the fusion of American-style boxing and Karate. Over time, this low-impact style became appropriate for children. Although often mistaken as Muay Thai, Japanese kickboxing differs in scoring and round duration. While Indian kickboxing remains rough and physically demanding with extensive grappling maneuvers, it is gaining popularity. In contrast to other forms, French kickboxing is less intense than American kickboxing.
French kickboxing, which prohibits contact with the knee or shin but allows for foot contact, has surprising origins in the street fighting techniques of 19th-century Paris. Unlike other types of kickboxing, open-handed hits are permitted in this sport. Despite its rough history, French kickboxing is now considered exceptionally safe with significantly lower injury rates compared to other forms of kickboxing.
