Interactions amongst people/ groups cause both benefits and problems. During 1715-1717, a war between the natives and North Carolinians broke out, making it the bloodiest war. The Yamasee War as it came to be known was caused/ triggered by many factors involving the relationship between the natives and North Carolinians.
This war not only was bloody but brought about an aftermath. Factors that triggered the war were that of trading systems, trader abuse and native debt by the Europeans.
One of the factors that contributed to the Yamasee War was that of trading abuse between the natives and the North Carolinians. There were numerous instances of reprehensible conduct committed by English traders but misconduct meant different things to different people. Southeastern Indians had their own ideas about proper and improper co
nduct and, for their own reasons, submitted a large number of trade related complaints to Charles Town officials. Some of these improper conducts dealt with women.
An Englishmen named Alexander Nicholas reportedly beat a women that he kept for his wife so that she dyed and the child within her.” These traders who raised their fists against native women therefore struck at more than a single victim and they not only attacked the women but also attacked the social values of the community at large. While the Indians had developed reasons to resent, fear and even hate the traders, this trade abuse was more than the tip of the iceberg for the natives. The Yamasees thought trade was just one manifestation of an alien society that seemed to be closing in at an alarming rate.
Other abuses were that of debt. Seven of the 30
complaints levied against English traders by Native Americans in the Journals of the Commissioners of the Indian Trade involved incidents of “taking away” the Indians personal belongings.
